I'm considering a city slick on my hardtail. During the week about 90% of my riding is on pavement. On weekends I'm on the trails and it's mostly hardpack. My current tires seem fine so far, but I'm wondering what else is out there. Iv'e got 2.0 Specialized Fast Trak LK Sport wire. If I go with a slick, will I notice a huge increase in my speed.

I'm not wanting to splash out on tire unless I can realy feel the gains. I don't know anything about tires, looking to get schooled.

The absence of a tread pattern is not necessarily the only factor that equates to speed on the road. Tire profile, side casing compliance and air pressure also plays a part.

I've used mtb slicks (1" or 1.25" Continentals from memory, about 85psi) on my hardtail MTB with good results however I started getting flats from broken glass. Right now I've got real narrow 1.75" full knobbies at 65psi and I get good rolling speed on the road and the treads keep it high enough to avoid glass punctures. I also don't worry about taking it over the odd trail and unpaved stoney foot paths.

It's a compromise I know and may not be what you're looking for... but if your area has a lot of broken glass it might be worth considering.
