Need some help here
 

Hello everyone,

I need help buying new mountain bike. Never had a mountain bike. I been riding my buddy's bike and its time for me to buy one. With my budget I have two choices buying a used 2006 Trek Fuel 80 or a brand new Schwinn's
The only problem with Trek, I'm thinking that its a used bike so there might be some problems that I won't be able to fix with my kind of knowledge and I just don't know anything about Schwinn. What you guys think will be good starter bike? Thank you in advance.

schwinn sucks donkey balls, don't get anything you can get in walmart (/kmart/target ect) if thats ur budget go used

if ur borrowing a friends bike, have him come to look at the condition, the biggest problem with most used bikes is a uber worn chain, thats so worn it has worn out the cassette and chainrings, so u'd be lookin at like $100+ in parts alone, other than that most other common problems are just adjustments or inexpensive to fix, brake pads ect are easy.

I'd invest in a chain checker when going to look at used bikes so that if its at 1% stretch you basicaly know it would cost alot to fix, chain by itself is no biggy, like $20 but if you need an entire drivetrain...

ask your friend who knows bikes to go with you

If you have a $400 budget (I see that from the Schwinn) I would get an entry level Specialized Hardrock. I differ from most other people here who will tell you to buy a used bike. I prefer a bike that I know has not been ridden by someone else and hence has no worn out components or secretly broken parts. It's ridiculous, some people come here saying they have a $2,000 budget, and they're still told they're better off buying used ! It's crazy. Buy a new quality bike.

Where can I buy the Specialized Hardrock. I did a google search but most of them were very expensive. I'll appreciate any suggestion.

P.S. I'm looking for that I can ride on and off-road.

Go to your local specialized dealer and look at the hardrock.
Hardrock is less than $400 and the hardrock disc is $460.
Best entry level bike out there- and you can definitely ride it off road.

yeah... No to schwinn. My bike is a used specialized, ended up spending about $400 on it, and its better than any other bike I could get for that.

Nice ! Good choice ! And great price I gotta say. It's under retail. In my shop that bike costs $475 !

If you haven't agreed to buy the bike yet you may want to take a look at your local Craigslist. There are usually some good deals in there and since the sellers are local you can see the bike before you buy. If you're not sure about evaluating a used bike you can always ask for permission to take it to a shop for a mechanic to look it over.
