My Fat is nice, but I need a FS.

I've decided, at 53 that I want some comfort. I would like some advice on a FS for XC in the 2000-2500 $ range. I have never ridden one, so am open to any suggestions. My back will thank you!:)

Specialized Stumpjumper or Epic get my vote.

Jameson 05-24-09 02:52 PM

Waaaay to many variables. Go ride a few and pick one that feels good.

rbrsddn 05-24-09 03:16 PM

I want something light, like under 25 lbs. 100mm front. Disc brakes. I'll head down to the Specialized shop and see what they have. I might just buy a frame/shock and build it up.

Lebowski 05-24-09 05:23 PM

the epic is nice but its not very plush, i'd go stumpjumer

08 Turner flux. 100 mm. Very plush. Under a grand close out price (frame). Build it with the parts you like. Epics are nice too though...

first thing send me your fat. Would look nice next to my Eddy. :p Then, listen to those guys....

giant anthem > specialized epic

Turner Flux > giant anthem < specialized epic

DirtPedalerB 05-24-09 07:04 PM

where would the Cannondale Scapel fit in that equation or a fisher hi-fi? ... I'm not an expert on the light bikes, so you may be right on the epic being better than the anthem, but I hate the brain thing.

Dannihilator 05-24-09 07:07 PM

Scalpel is a soft tail, fisher hi-fi, if trek/fisher can figure out how to make that bike and not have a different part of the frame fail every model year has potential.

I think this weight at the price you want might be a bit tight - I had an Epic expert, just shy of 28 pounds. I could have droped 1.5 pounds in the wheels/tires.

sscyco 05-24-09 09:53 PM

Or you can stay brand loyal and go with one of these

kenhill3 05-24-09 10:10 PM

25# for $2500 ain't gonna happen.

DirtPedalerB 05-24-09 10:28 PM

carbon cannondale rush without the lefty. since the scalpel is DQed as being a soft tail. not sure on the weights, but ken is probably right.

yellowjeep 05-24-09 10:38 PM

The scalpel still has 100mm of travel.

kcham16 05-24-09 11:44 PM

+100 to the Turner Flux. i just got one a few months ago. best bike i have ever had. it honestly makes me a better rider as well, as it forces me to up my game. i know Lancey says it's not about the bike, but this thing is sick.

Maybe when I win Lotto! Fats are going for crazy prices now. Plus I want a real FS.

PS that turner flux looks good. What is the frame/shock weight? I'm guessing I'll be double my 2500 when I'm done! Fat might have to go...

Don't do it!

Holy smokes man, if you are willing to go 27-28# then you'll be able to hit your budget. Don't be such a weenie. :)

On the other hand, the Flux is tempting.

Agreed!
I never understood the obsession about dropping a pound or two on a bike that already weighs 27lbs, if you wanna a pound lighter bike take a dump before you go for a ride or just go to the gym and hit some weights it'll help you push that extra pound or two up the hill.

rbrsddn 05-25-09 02:04 PM

I climb ladders every day, so the legs are good. I think a 25 or 26 bound FS would be awesome. I'm going to get the frame and shock, and build it up. If it's 27, no big deal. I'll make sure and take that dump! And I'll probably never sell the Fat, because they aren't easy to replace once they are gone. http://smilies.sofrayt.com/eng/crying12.gif

I don't think that you'll find a fs under 25# for $2500. I have a trek top fuel 8 that I'm very happy with. Stock with pedals it weighs just under 27# and cost a little more than $2500.
