Does that frame have the V-brake pivots? If not, then you'll have to go with discs.

You need a fork that matches the original fork in terms of length. In other words, get a fork with about the same amount of travel as the original fork. When choosing your fork, pick one that supports the braking system of your choice.

i just typed a massive response to the OP, but i abandoned it, because i'm getting the impression that s/he wants to do this cheap. just wanted to make the following points:

-$150 is steap for that frame, imho
-unless you have access to a substantial mtb parts bin to pull stuff from, it's much cheaper to just buy a used complete bike at a nice price in decent condition
-if you just want to build the frame up b/c you enjoy doing such things (so do i!), you will probably need to budget more than the $480 entry-price to the p-range of bikes.

I agree that $150 is steep for a used P.2 frame. It's a jump frame, so look it over really good for fractures.

What are you going to use this bike for?
What size is it?
How tall are you?

Jump frames are small, so if you plan to ride trails with it...you may need to order a "super-long" seatpost to compensate for the short seat tube. It's really not a great frame for general trail riding.






A - a good headset for this bike would be the Cane creek Tank line of headsets. Cheap and tough.

B - if you're a bigger rider...cheap BB/Crankset may bite you. You don't want a flexy junky crankset. On the other hand...a Shimano Deore Hollowtech II is a great way to go. RaceFace Evolve X-Type cranksets are fairly cheap if you keep your eyes open.

C - Deore is adequate...at that level...I'd go SRAM X.5

F - Cheap wheels are a bad idea. If you're using this bike as a jump bike...cheap wheels will fall apart. If you're going to use it as a trail bike...at least get something like a Deore/Rhyno lite wheelset. Fairly inexpensive / heavy...but should last a while.

The frame is a disc only frame.




2a - Run disc fr/rear...it's much better in the long run and Avid BB5's are quite inexpensive.

3 - X.5 derailleur works with X.5 shifters....get some Avid FR-5 brake levers for the BB5 disc brakes.



Piece by piece, this bike could be done for a few hundred if you know what you're doing and are patient with ebay and craigslist...all the way up to several hundred.




Again...what type of riding are you gonna do? Just go to your LBS and get a Specialized Hardrock.

There is a lot going on with this thread. if you like going out on trails and going up and down hills, then you are most likely referring to XC riding. the specialized p's are dirt jump, as Ed mentioned. you wouldn't really want this for XC in the long run, although you could have some fun with it.
coming from my own experiences, i would pass on this deal. you are looking at getting a bike that really isn't meant for what you want it for, plus building it up is going to cost you more than hitting up craigslist.
my advice would be to go to a shop, talk to someone about the kind of riding you do and want to do, and have them offer some bike suggestions. if you can't afford these, notice the type of bike they are talking about, and look for a used one.

DDAC- the rimbrake rockhopper goes for $640. The rim-brake hardrock goes for $390. Comparable bikes are available at similar pricepoints from most major bicycle marques. I agree with Ed et al that you probably won't dig the geometry of the p2 frame.

I think the price for the used p2 frame at $150 is steep b/c it's an aluminum frame that has possible seen some abuse, and it may be cracked already, or seriously stressed throughout it's lifetime. further, i think the original MSRP for this and most major-label bikes is ridiculous. But, really, you ought to get what you want. Still, I'd sooner get the hardrock at $390 with rimbrakes or $460 with discs than spend $150 for the used frame with the wrong geo and the sketchy past, knowing that i'd probably want to upgrade many of the hardrock's componenets as time goes on.

As a smaller dude...the size "long" will be too stretched out with a seat tube that's too short for trail riding.

A size "long" is my size (6'2") for gorilla arms.

If you're just going casually ride some trail...drop $250-$350 on a new bottom-feeder Giant Yukon, Specialized Hardrock, or Trek 3700.

Heck man...even a Trek 820 would work.
