Looking to Upgrade, Don't know where to start

So, my last two bikes have been Treks, my current one a 3700, and I am looking to upgrade. Until now I've been pretty sheltered from other bike brands and I don't know where to look. A shame, I know.

I want to spend around $400-$600 on a XC/Trail bike that'll be better than the 3700 I have now.

Could you guys point me in the right direction as far as brands are concerned?

Thanks,
Trek Noob

the specialized rockhopper comp is a solid bike, an 08 model would probably run about 600 or less depending on where you live and if stuff is clearanced.

The Dude:

Thanks, I was looking at the entry-level specialized. Now I just need to find a LBS that still has some of last years.
