Feels weird if it's small

Hey Guys,

I'm going to go purchase a Trek 6500 or maybe a 6700 today. It'll be my first mountain bike. Last week I went to my LBS to get an idea of what frame size I was. I sat on a 17" frame they had and I felt like my upper body was completely stretched when I sat down with both hands on the handle bar. Then I sat on a 15" frame and my body didn't feel like it was stretching out, but it felt like I was on a bmx bike because of its size. Since the shop wouldn't let me take the bike for a spin, I rode my other friends bikes (3700 & 4300) with 17" frames and I didn't feel stretched out. They said it might be because they positioned their seat closer to the handle bar.

I'm around 5'6-5'7, so what do you guys think?

If your LBS is not gonna let you go for a test ride Take your business else where. How can they expect you to get. Bike without a test ride?

yeah, go to a new shop. A good one will let you ride anything, all day to get the fit right. Maybe the 17" with a shorter stem? Not sure what the length comes on the 6500, but maybe a 80 or 90 would help.
