What Should I Buy ?
Hi Guys,
I really need some advice on a few things, my name is Eddie...I am new here & it's nice to meet everyone.
Anyway....I have been riding bikes in general for a long time....I'm 45 now & thank GOD I have never had an accident riding department store bikes since I hear they are such low quality.
I wanted a Mongoose, but now I hear that they don't make what they use too.
My bike is just a workout tool for me, I like to ride uphill a lot, no jumping or anything fancy...it's all about cardio & muscle for me....I love it !
I go about 5ft 10...254...I gotta have something solid !
I bought a Magna Excitor ''knowing it was cheap'' about 3 weeks ago from Target...having never had any problems in the past with department store bikes.. I figured what I bought would do the job for a few years.
I ride about 5 miles daily on nothing but pavement...none the less I ride some pretty steep hills which can be very dangerous with the wrong bike.
Well....thank GOD I was going uphill because about 3 days ago my handle bars slipped & went from side to side....I tried to repair the problem but they still slip from side to side.
It looks to me that if you weld the handlebar down permanently you really would not have a handle bar issue ?

So, I am here to ask you guys what is the cheapest QUALITY mountain bike I can buy to make sure I get my money's worth.
I don't mind spending more money, but I really can't at the moment.....but again...I will.
Please, I'd like to hear from as many of you as possible on what to buy...I could live with it if I knew that the Mongoose I bought at the Sports Authority held up for at least 3 years, 4-5 days a week, 5 miles a day doing what I do...man I am so thankful I wasn't going down some of the hills I ride when my handle bars slipped.

There are two basic things you will need to do.
Buy from an LBS, they will have the means to take care of you and your bike.
Be willing to spend at least $300-$400.

Why buy a new bike? You can just tie that one to your belt and run up hills. Then you can let it roll down hills, still tied to your belt loop, and have to run fast enough to keep up. Even better excersize than biking!

Hi Eddie! Welcome to the beginning of your pocketbook gone to Hell.
Read my sig. If you're not riding trails (or some MTB'ish terrain)...you're in the wrong forum.
Oh yeah...Mongoose still makes decent rides. They don't stock the good ones at SA though.

Eddie - find a shop that carries Specialized and check out the Hardrock line of bikes. If you're going to be primarily road riding, slap some slick tires on it and you'll have all you want/need for what your'e doing -- and a safe and well built bike (that's upgradeable in the future if you desire).
