trek 800 bb spindle?
 

Hi,

I'm looking to determine a replacement crankset for a Trek 800, so I'm looking for the BB spindle length in order to find a compatible replacement. I'm trying to track it down by model year by the lettering/logo on the frame.

The logo is an older lettering style that I don't see that often; in fact I can't even find an example image of that lettering on BF or the web in general. I've looked on Bikepedia but still cannot find the example. The existing crankset is a Shimano Altus mountain triple 42/34/24 with 170 mm arms, although it is not clear whether or not these are original equipment.

Unfortunately I don't have a pic of the bike.

According to Bikepedia, the 1996 model used a 116mm spindle. Any insights to share?

Best bet is to take your dial caliper to the spindle and measure it. Or take your old vernier caliper to it, measure it and convert that measurement to millimeters ;). Oh, and measure your BB shell while you're at it too.

Makes sense! Unfortunately our customer just brought the bike by momentarily, so no pics or spindle measurements. The lettering style has the numbers readable from the side, diagonally laid out, but the numbers are straight up and down - like this:

You do know that the spindle length is specific to crankset and desired chainline, right? You work on bikes?

sure. I put a replacement crankset (Sugino Impel 150) on a Trek 930 last week; I was easily able to find the spindle length on Bikepedia and order a replacement set that dropped right in without needing the adjust the FD.

For the 800 though, I can't determine the year of the bike to be able to find the spindle length. On Bikepedia, Isee more than one spindle length given for 800s (113, 116). For replacement cranks, I see a models meant for 110/113 and also 122. Thinking the 113 should work, although I thought I throw it out to the experts for your insights.

This is for a repeat customer who was comparison shopping and was not willing to leave the bike. As I said I should have at least gotten the serial number to be able to narrow it down a little.

sweet! Thanks for that link. It lists 116/121 for Shimano Altus, so I'm thinking the a crankset meant for 122 would be the better choice over 110/113. Thoughts?

There's also an Alivio set that is meant for 118.

Look at the model number next time, not just the line name...
