I've seen many agruments over Flat/Clipless but no one ever mentions toeclips. I personally hate them but i'am just curious.
P.S. I'm pissed. My friend gets back thursday and I leave on monday. And I really wanted to go riding with him but the weather at weather.com says its T-Storms every day!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stupid weather. I could convince him to do a ride in the rain....always fun

I still ride 'em. I'm in the process of giving clipless a go, however; just bought a pair of well-used Shimanos for $5 at the swap meet (but damn, they're heavy!). Now looking for shoes on sale somewhere.
Coincidentally, I had an occasion this weekend which emphasized a drawback to toe clips. An upper section of the trail (Eldridge Grade, Mt. Tam) was technical enough that I had to dab frequently, and would sometimes opt to ride the platform opposite the toe clip. Well, of course the clip would contact the rocky trail at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Not a big deal for going down hill where you can keep the pedals level, but a real drag for trying to climb uphill over sharp, grabby rocks.
It seems that either platforms or clipless would have been better in this situation.

Ive ridden off-road with toe-clips. On the occasions when Ive wipped out at low speed (slipping into tractor tyre ruts), Ive had no problem getting my feet out before I hit the ground.
I dont use them tight, and I take care with my choice of shoe.
They are a good choice on a bike you use for general purpose riding/commuting/shopping as well as sport. I wouldn't recomend them for racing these days.

I currently have clipless pedals for the bike I use for recreational rides, but currently just have bare pedals on my fixed-gear commuter bike. I don't think riding a fixed-gear bike that way is very wise. Accordingly, I've been trying to decide which way to go with that bike because my most frequent commute is only about a mile, and I don't want to have to change shoes for it. I will most likely go with clips and straps, but I've also been considering PowerGrips or a pedal that is flat on one side and clipless on the other. Anyone have any other pedal suggestions for the best solution for predominantly short distance commuting (I also go on longer trips around town for errands etc)?
Thanks,
Henry

I still use toeclips. I have to use my bike for getting to school and for XC riding. Unless I want to haul 3 pairs of shoes with me every day to school (1 pair for the gym, 1 pair for working in the lab, and 1 pair of cycling shoes) then I'll have to stick with toe clips. I just don't have room in my backpack for that much footwear!

I ride toe clips on my road and commuter bike and sometimes my MTB. I am going clipless on the road bike soon, but the MTB will probably stay with platforms/clips for a while.
I had an incident with toe clips while MTBing and am now kind of afraid of them off road. It was a muddy day and I kept getting stuck, so I was out of the clips a lot. Going 10-12mph while riding the platform side, the strap of the toe clip caught a stump and spun me around off the bike. Something took some skin off the inside of my thigh and left me with the nastiest bruise I have ever had. It took a few weeks to heal and hurt like hell. I am one of those people that doesn't really show bruises regardless of what happens, so this left an impression on me.

i prefer toe clips over clipless as i am still in the process of getting used to the clipless. i feel more confident releasing from toe clips as my spd's don't feel that consistent right now.

I prefer clips, but knee problems have tempted me to try out some toe clips again... I'm not sure if I'll stick with them unless they make a significant diference.
