Sad, out for the rest of the season
Got surgery the other day, 50% of the cartilage adding depth to my shoulder joint was torn off the joint bone, had to get 4 anchors drilled in, wont be biking for a while. Anyonne else have this done? It was a torn labrum. Id be interested to know how someone else healed annd how long it took to get back to mountain biking

I had about 1/3 of my labrum tear off years ago. Same procedure, and they heated it up to shrink the joint. This was before I biked. Recovery to hit the weights took a long time. To be on the bike again probably won't take as long. Good Luck>

3 arthroscopes, 3 holes, this surgery used to involve opening up all your skin around the shoulder, crazy

yeah its onnly plastic anchors with sutures holding the cartilage until it heals, the plastic stays in there but no exciting x rays, theyve yet to give me surgery pics of inside my joint, that should be cool. until then you can look at the same arm 10 years ago, wish i had the xray with the 3 temporary 5" pins going through the bone but cant find it. this was broken playing hockey though, hard to see by the bottom of my upper arm basically snapped off the 'ball' at the top which goes ito the joinnt socket. you can see the ball on the left still in the socket and the bone nudge over. healed like a ****ing charm though, the doctor was so proud that it din't f up the growth plate, me too!

Try distractions away from the pain. Simular to pain gate theory. Perfical stimulation=something else to process=reduce preception of pain.
Some suggestions. Simulate another area. Ie a hot water bottle on some other part of the body. Or even deep heat.
have a shower, light exercise
Listern to Ipod.
listen to talking book
Sex!
mechanical massage
sleep on a slightly prickly surface. Wet you skin and let the air conditioning dry it off! Else put fan on.
play computer chess till distracted away from pain
You get the idea. smell= pot porri, sound= radio tuned to white noise(you will still be able to sleep), light blubs that change colur, eat a strong curry. As much as you can, plus the drugs and any thing local to your shoulder that your medics recommend.
Lastly make sure your are tired out before going to bed. walk or use an exercise bike no handed.
Remember that pain often feels worse at night when there is nothing else to concentrate on.
Hope some of this helps .All the best
