Okay...harliej went out there and ran the hill with his GPS from bottom to top (where we ride) instead of just the walking path.
400ft of vert in little less than .7mi. From the street to the RR trax is .7mi, so it's actually more like 400ft of vert in .5mi.
We were doing it 6x on the SS, so it was 2400 feet of vert in about 3mi. Took us around 35-45min with breaks.

I talked to him again this morning and he said it may be less than 400 & I'll get you the exact numbers.
I'm expecting somewhere betw. 300-400.
I'm curious agian.

I think that 'alot of climbing specifies' continuous climbing. If that were a consecutive 2400 feet in three miles (15% average gradient) that would be a brutal climb. Especially if it was singletrack and rocky and rooty.
Broken up, it is great interval work, and will certainly make you a stronger climber.
Beleive me, I am right there with you. Most of my local terrain is rolling at best so I just repeat the hills as best I can. I don't consider it alot of climbing, just a good interval style workout.
FWIW, these types of workouts, coupled with travel once a month to climbers terrain get me in good enough shape to tackle 100 milers on the SS with lots of climbing so they must be doing something.

^ agreed - we've done some rolling trail rides in the city with short steep climbs that add up to as much climbing as the same distance trail in the mountains that have all climbing on the first half and all descending on the second half.
While the rolling city trails get you worked out, it's nothing like a sustained singletrack (or even fireroad) climb of a similar grade.

I think the GPS he's using is a Garmin Forerunner wrist'thingy.
It's an easy climb for the most part...heck man, it's paved. The first I'd say 3/4 of the distance is very slight...the last 1/4 (or so) is the steep as all heck section that is at least 200' itself.
I don't really get off on climbing at all. I usually go ride the singletrack for a while and then climb this hill and hit a different section of trail...maybe climb it another time or two...then head home.
There have been a few days though that I really just wanted to get a "circuit training" type session in where I'd just go climb it 6x consecutively.
It just makes the rest of the trail more fun when I have more energy from the climbing.

My Lacrosse sports watch Shows 188 feet above the river bottom at the top of the turn on halfway hill. Hate to say it but I believe it's closer to the truth.
Hell the capitol building is only 185 feet isn't it?

According to my phone it's somewhere between 194-217ft. in 0.6 mi.
On the SS, I reached 41mph descending it. Took 3.2min to climb.
The important information that I learned from this little project is that it's much more fun to go down the hill than up it.

Not really...that was on the SS. I'm pretty sure that we could get close to fiddy with a good high gear to spin. There's a curve at the bottom, so ya gotta be careful

On my mountain bike my max is, I think, 37. That's because I haven't gotten any big enough hills without lights to go fast as I can. Damn metropolitan area..

I think you have your computer calibrated wrong. 41 MPH in .6 miles? With time to accelerate AND slow enough to make the curve at the bottom?
I don't think so.
Oh, and while not over the top, this is a fair bit of climbing:
I was going for 12 miles and 3000', but it got cold, so I turned back at 8 miles.

Verified twice.
I did my max speed with GPS, he did his with a computer. 41MPH isn't all that fast.
When I was on a geared bike in the dark and a little foggy...(0530 in the am) my friends computer read 43mph and I passed him fairly easy. It's easy to hit speeds like that on that hill. I'm not wrong. It's not like a 90 degree turn...it's a curve that you need to be careful at.
