You may have a fractured skull mate. Trees are quite hard, and tend not to have much "give".
I'd go first to ER, and then the helmet shop.

No fractured skull or anything. Just minor head trauma.

and the brakes locked up after I hit an unseen tree root which pitched the bike totally sideways and I panicked and hit the brakes hard, got nowhere and bailed. After close inspection, the bike is fine. the rear derailleur may be a tad bent but it still shifts fine and doesnt hit the spokes in granny gear but I dont ever use that so its all good.

I can remember two or three distinct times when I was told that I was fine by my dad (a PA). Every single time, I ended up having a broken bone. Having said that, all of those times were when I was quite young, so its understandable. . .

Just ride.
Most helmet companies will give you a discount on a replacement if you were in a crash. You'll have to give them your old one.

inner ear
I was hit by a car last summer and hit the right side of my head on the road; the impact broke my helmet.
I did get a clicking sound in my ear followed (eventually) by a feeling of fullness in the ear. Two tests later at the ENT's office confirms that I have nerve damage in the inner ear. My hearing is perfect though.
The only symptom now is the fullness and some discomfort when experiencing loud sounds.

Break your helmet with a sledge hammer (But say it was a tree) and tell your mum she needs to buy you a really good one that you'll never beable to afford or you'll end up being a fat kid cause you wont get any exercise, or cut your hair and get a job.

When Must I Replace a Helmet?
Replace any helmet if you crash. Impact crushes some of the foam, although the damage may not be visible. Helmets work so well that you need to examine them for marks or dents to know if you hit. Most manufacturers recommend replacement after five years. We think that depends on usage, and many helmets given reasonable care are good for longer than that. But if your helmet was made before 1990, it's time to replace it. Replace the buckle if it cracks or a piece breaks off. No one requires you to replace your helmet, so give it some individual thought.

Just ride.
Specialized will give you 20% off. Take the old one into the dealer.
