Rim tape - cloth vs rubber

I'm a road bike and always use Velox cloth rim tape because of the high pressure of the road tube/tire.

With MTB and the low pressures 25-40 lbs, is the cloth tape necessary? I just a bought a used MTB took and took my tires to replace the tubes, clean/grease the bearings, true the wheels. When the tubes were out, I saw that I had rubber rim tape. Should I replace the rubber rim tape with Velox or is this an overkill?

I've used Velox, some glued-on ribbon crap from Univ.Cycles, rubber OEM strip, and black electrical tape. All have worked just fine.

I like Velox the best.

The only stuff I've had fail was on some old Specialized rims. It was a yellow plastic material. Cracked out on me 'round the turn of the century. With a 7-speed Suntour freehub on there, that means they lasted 10 years, tops.

I've used Velox forever. It can be reused numerous times. Use some spray adhesive when it loses tackiness.

I use velox or the plastic stuff from Performance. Either does the job just as well.

I've always used Velox and never had a problem, I don't see any reason to change.

No one wanted to play your game? I'll bite. It's good you use rubber. Don't want to be spreading that gene pool.

On topic: I used the blue & green Velox. One for road rims and the other for wider rims.

I have a real rookie question…I have a set of Sun SOS wheels and am getting ready to put on the tape and get them on my bike build. The problem is that the wheels sort of have this kind of shape. I know I can get tape that will seat down in the “grooved” area. I have tape that is wider already. Could I just press it in the grove and then let the tape come up the sides a bit? It isn’t nearly so wide that it would stick out the edges, it just wouldn’t fit in the groove.

Mmmmmkay...I'm there. Did I mention that I run solid rubber tires with no tubes?

When I use elect tape...I make two passes.

Ya know...speaking of Ray's-

How many crazy-skeel'd people are there vs. hacks just trying to manage an 8" skinny? I've personally never had the pleasure of riding with highly skilled DJ'ers / Trials / FR peeps. I mean...we have a few local crazies that I've tooled around with, but never been in a busy park with shredders who have a nice line planned with me getting in the way. What's it like up there?

I'm not intimidated b/c I'm a little past that age...more like I just don't wanna get in anybody's way when I'm just trying to tweak out a jump with some rubber person behind me who wants to bust out a superman seat-grab.

Man, I am WAY past “that age” and a hack, but better than the average hack I guess..at least on the singletrack. My kid is 14 and a serious rider, skateboarder, snowboarder, etc, so I usually ride with him. I guess that means I am not too much of an embarrassment eh?

Ray’s is supposedly a pretty cool situation. Sunday will be my first trip personally, although a bunch of the local guys go up there all the time and said it is all good. My son has been there and loves it. We live about 2.5 hours away, so it isn’t exactly in my backyard. We’ll be lucky to get up there 5-6 times in a year. There are a couple of indoor places closer, but really more pipes, ramps, etc….fun to play around on, but not quite the same. I’ll let you know how it compares when I get back.

Thanks for the info on the tape…I am a bit worried about the SOS wheels. They aren’t the strongest wheels in the world, but I won’t have the Outlaws until next week…”ride what you got” I guess.
