Saying 'x is best" is exactly an what an opinion is. If some one asks me what is better Gary Fisher or Giant I am going to say Gary Fisher.
You have a Gary made overseas and I have one made in America. Which one is better, in your opinion?
Personally I find it funny that this has grown to be such a hit. One man talking smack about overseas manufacturers can gain this much attention in a forum about what bike should I buy. I sit at work and read this and get a laugh at it. It fills my time.
You may feel your discussion is a hit but I really think people are just trying to understand your concept of thinking. So, no. This may not be such a big hit in a positive way.

If you look at the lower right hand side of the page in the section meet the new OCLV. It says that it is handmade in the USA. I happen to think this is one example of the quality that our country has to offer. Trek is one of the most sold bikes in the country.
Only the highest end Trek have the made in the USA sticker on them. Not saying that all other bikes suck just saying that there is a reason that Trek makes its top of the line series here in the states.
I really like my Fisher bike. I really like Konas. I would buy a Kona. I would not be so shallow minded to think that I will only buy American bike. I don't have that kind of money. I just think that we happen to have some of the best bike on the planet made right here in America.

I personally own a Kona Coiler. Great bike but for your applications, I'd look into something with a more pedal friendly suspension design. Both Giant and Specialized have fantastic suspension designs so it's worth a test ride. I've been a fan of the FSR design for a while but the articles i've read on the maetsro design looks promising. many of the virtual pivot bikes (including vpp and dw link) are great for isolating pedal performance but if not applied properly, can be fussy.
Just a note as well, the tubes may be made in America but put together in another part of the country (or vice versa). It's a clever way of marketing....not to say your are incorrect in thinking the trek you mentioned isn't made in the US (i have no clue). just an FYI...
