please help!

hay guys, i have a 2004 hardrock, and i just got Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore LX SGS &
Front Derailleur: Shimano Deore LX, top-pull. i currently have a truvantive x-flow crank. so my problem is that i have a 7 speed & the derailleur is a 9 speed. can anyone tell if my front crank is compatible for the front derailleurs, and what Cassette Sprockets i can get for 9 spd conversion...my budget is $60 for everything including front crank if i need to change it

you cranks will work fine. i'll assume that you have 9 speed shifter levers so then you'll just need a cassette and chain. sram or shimano 9 speed chains/cassettes will both work fine. sram stuff is usually a bit cheaper in price (still good quality though) than shimano. try the sram PG-950 or 970 cassette with their 951 or 971 chains.

The Sram cassette will work with your Shimano gear, and the PG-950 is about the cheapest 9 speed cassette you can buy. Should run you between $25 and $30 dollars. Any 9 speed chain will also work, either Shimano or Sram, and you can get one for as little as $16. Your current crankset will work with the front derailleur. Do you have 9 speed shifters to go with your RD? If not, you won't be able to use your 9 gears.

yea helmut...i have the rapid fire shifters...i was reading the reviews on the sram 951 & 971 chain, and it says that they break/rust easy.....have you guys had similar experiences? is there a better chain that can go on the pg-970? would a 08 Shimano LX M580 9 Speed 11-34 Mountain Bike Cassette work for the conversion too? what chain would i need for this 1?

All of your Sram and Shimano chains and cassettes will be compatible. Some say on the packaging "only for use with x-chain" but they're lying. I haven't heard about Sram chains rusting or breaking. The LX cassette will work fine with any 9 spd chain.
