Trek 9800 OCLV
 

I have a Trek 9800 with less than 450 miles on it. I bought it in the early 90's. It has never been raced wecked or ridden in the rain. It is a hard tail with XT componets. What do you think it may be worth.

Mtb tech changes so quickly, resale value tends to drop quickly. Without knowing the exact model year or overall condition, I'd expect 20% to 40% of retail.

Quill stem. 1" steerer tube. 7-speed freehub body (maybe).
These things lessen the value of the bike, regardless of what condition it is in or how many miles were put on it.
Actual value today compared to retail price when new is going to be chump-change, unless you can find someone who wants the frame for sentimental reasons, or something like that.

Odds are it's 1 1/8" threadelss. Trek didn't become the 800 lb gorilla in the industry by ignoring industry trends. The first OCLV MTB frames/bikes (1992) featured a 1 1/8" threaded headset, and the 1993 and up models were all 1 1/8" threadless.

But to the OP -- MTB trends change quickly. You may get more value and satisfaction from your vintage MTB by hanging it on the wall than selling it for pennies on the dollar.

I had one of the first 9800s. It came unglued, Trek replaced it with a Pro Issue a while later, that one had the glue fail as well then after regluing it they told me to get lost. See someone on fleabay's got one for $469.99 buy it now...but no one's bought altho there's been two offers. There's another one with a starting bid of $450.00 but no one's biting yet. Might be worth more keeping it. Turned mine into a singlespeed for light use, don't trust it much any more...

I think I purchased the bike in 1994. (talk about senior monents) Yes, it has a 1 1/8 headset and an 8 speed freewheel. The bike came with cantilever brakes and I changed them out to V brakes. At that time I also changed out the shifter/brake lever to the XT brake-shift lever that was together. It even has the same tires that came on the bike, a little dry rot but still rideable. I rode it up and down the street this afternoon (second time this year).
I think you may be right on BIKINFOOL, the bike is worth more to me siting in my shop than 4 or 500 $$. I'm glad I did not have your problems.
