Trek Y26
I'm interested in purchasing a new bike. I was looking into the Trek Y26. Looks like an all around great "newbie" bike. I'm currently riding a "Rhyno", which is actually my fathers. He does not ride it at all, but I'd like to purchase a new one so we can both go on bike rides from time to time.
I'd like to look for some trails around my area. I've already found a couple half decent ones fairly close. I'm looking into the full suspension as I don't know where I want to go with mountain biking.
If any one has any experience with this bike, let me know what you think!

Its a very outdated suspension design with poor pedaling efficiency, low end parts and a very heavy frame. In this price range your money is far better spent on a hardtail. Check out the "$500 MTB Thread" at the top of this forum.
Some to start you off:
Trek 4300
Specialized Hardrock /Sport
Giant Ranier/Iguana/Yukon
Those are kind of the "Big 3" in cycling as far as brand names, and all those I've listed are pretty solid entry level bikes that wont leave you wanting to upgrade in a month most likely.

Hmm, what is so bad about the older version? I'd rather get the older model, as I am not doing anything to extreme yet. Once I find some nice single lane trails I'll invest into that.

There is nothing wrong with the 2004 model trek 4300. Almost all bike stores will have the 2004 model bikes on sale so you can probably get a great deal.

i have a trek 4300 as my backup bike. got a great deal on a duke xc, installed new deraillueurs, crankset, and new rims off my friends bike, (old rynolites, he got new ones for christmas), threw those on their and i fricken love the bike.
even if you dont change anything on it, its a good bike.
