Maximum speed on flat roads?
Hi guys, I'm 14 years old, and have a $89 mountain bike.
I recently bought a new Schwinn Tourist(hybrid), but the stock wheels are those of ROAD tires. I'm going on a 30-40 miles bike ride tomorrow, and I was wondering how to maximize my speed, in all aspects, but especially in the flat, paved roads, where everyone else's hybrids/ 400$ MTB's rip me apart in speed. Additional info: Height: 5' 0" Weight: 95 lbs. MTB tires: 24" and fat treads Hybrid tires: 700c, super thin, no treads Max. speed ever on MTB (flat): 18-21 mph Thanks a lot |
Draft behind one of the big guys.

LMAO hahahaha loved it seriously, thx for the advice, any other tips appreciated |
I"ve got a carbon hardtail that let's me keep up with cyclocross bros for a short time, but Serious roadies would drop me on the first hill. that said
i can spin the MTB at 24 MPH on flat ground for short time. What can you spin that hybrid to? Your 14 heck, man, the only thing holding you off the pace is you. Ask girlscout 13 he wasn't ever intimidated by anyone on a bike. |
crack cocaine.

If you have slick tires that half the battle. Pump them up to their maximum rates pressure. That will further lower the rolling resistance.
The half of the battle is aerodynamics. You have to make yourself as "slip-streamy" as possible. Don't wear excessively baggy clothes. Yes, draft as much as possible. Finally, Something I've found gives me an extra 2-3 mph when I'm using my MTB on the road is to position your hands around the stem. This will put you very close to "aerobar" position. |
Not knowing where you are, get yourself some tight shorts (yeah, bicycle shorts,) some tights, some wicking (tight) shirts, and a semi tight windshirt.
You will be surprised at how much easier you go through the air. As to tire pressure, it's a very fine line you tread, but maybe not as much at your weight. Find a point where comfortable pressures meet firm handling, and pinch resistance, and you are there. At your weight, you can probably get by with quite a bit less than max pressure. Then, keep your eyes open for road hazards, and make yourself light when you encounter them. |
24" wheels don't help for speed, I'd use the hybrid. You can always stay out front and weave alot. How'd the ride go?
