Your MTB max speed record
I keep trying to beat 27.1 mph, which I did once, and since I haven't been able to beat it nor reach it again.
What's yours ? |
44-45mph, but I was bombing down a paved road at the time. On dirt, maybe 25 or so.
|
I hit a recorded 42.2 today for a new high. It was a paved road. On dirt, I've just touched 30.
|
The last computer I used on a mountain bike had indicated all kinds of wonderful top speeds, even when I was nowhere near them. Don't use computers for quite a while now. Of believable readings I seem to remember on a steep dirt road (fortunately straight and flat) getting somewhere around 44, at least it seemed scary enough to believe. That was flying. Can't even imagine how those guys racing the original Kamikaze race on Mammoth used to do it (hitting 65 on rigid bikes, probably without discs...sound fun?).
|
35.2mph it was a nice long fireroad. :)
|
Wow I don't know how you guys do those 40+ things. Even on paved roads I encounter winds so heavy they prevent me from getting anywhere near 40.

Somewhere over 40 mph: UCI Masters Worlds; Sun Peaks, B.C.; August, 2006.
|
My fastest is 47 down a fire road in the foothills.

Fastest speed on a road bike is 56.3mph, descending the backside of Sagehen Summit in the Mammoth Lakes area. The 40+mph roll on the mtb was on a rental, coming down Minaret Road from the Mammoth Mtn main lodge to Mammoth Village. I was running late, and had to get the bike back before they closed. :D |
57 bombing down a paved road from a trail.

Come on---This is a mountain bike forum-- Whats all this road stuff?
53.5 mph on the South Downs way in one day event in 2003. Coming down from Butser hill but have to admit that we did brake for the gate halfway down--Were not certain as to whether it was open. The "we" bit is the obvious clue--- 400 lbs all up weight and as steady as a rock. |
Chelboed and I did 44-45mph at 5AM in the dark, down a paved access road, with a small cateye bar mount light and Walmart head lamp. Not one of the smartest things that I've ever done.

I got 25.6 mph yesterday. On my practically rigid bike, actually on dirt to. All of these road speeds mean nothing to me

Weighing 230 lbs helps. :)

Double-nickle down a dirt fire road in NE WA state on my dads Huffy b/c my Cannondale was MIA from UPS delivery.
|
^ Hahahahaha...
I've hit like 35, do it every school day on the way home. |

55 mph on a long fire road down hill outside of Beal AFB in Northern Cali. It was back in 93 and at the time I was riding a Bridgestone MB2 with a steel Softride stem. There are some paved roads around here where you can hit 50+ with no real effort. My favorite is the mile long hill on "Rambo Rd" and 56 mph is the road bike max.
|
44 mph on my Schwinn Moab 2 Aluminum back in 98' down a paved hill. Probably fastest off road was 25-26 mph.
|
If we're talking on-road, my record is 57.3mph, but that's stretching the definition of "mountain bike" since it was a mountain bike with 1.25" slicks. That's down Charles Road with a tailwind, a hill stevemtbr undoubtedly knows well :)
Off-road, I've topped 40mph momentarily down a steep slope that levels out onto fireroad, but outside of that circumstance, low 30's is about as high as I can get around here. I've been run over by a guy going downhill at an unsafe speed, so I try to keep within my braking envelope when I'm off-roading. Emphasis on "try" ;) |
2 billion and 3.......micrometres per hour.
|
Something like 40mph... though I don't bomb roads lately after a near-death experience with a death-wobble on a 18% grade road traveling around 40mph.
You don't ever want to see a "rubber top-tube" illusion, baaad sign. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeL-zaVIFuA |
I've hit around 37 or a tad higher, comming down off a road from a Castle.
Had to keep on the brakes because it was loose gravel w/ wet leaves... and peoples dogs. |
I forgot to mention that the Huffy was a rigid steel 15spd...would have been more gnarcore if it were a SS...but my dad wouldn't let me rip crap off his ride just to be gnar.
