Rescued this puppy from an abusive home

If you saw my previous thread about a month ago, a friend gave me a killer deal on an Ironhorse Maverick 5.0, but I later realized that I value the family jewels and needed something a little smaller. So I sold that one and went looking for something decent. I found a Specialized Rockhopper Comp (Deore 9 speed) on Craigslist for $115. When I called him, he told me he'd sell it for $60 because it needed a tune-up and a tube. I picked it up and here's how the poor thing had been treated:

1) Somehow, there were bits of inner tube stuck in the cassette lock ring.
2) There was no rim tape on the front wheel (no wonder it was flat).
3) The rear hub was way too tight and not spinning well.
4) The shifters were sticking.
5) The brake pads were rubbing so one side was terribly worn.

A little elbow grease and the purchase of another beat up craigslist special as a donor bike brought it to full health, and I can't wait to hit the trails with it.

The donor bike was going to be sold as a frame and seperate parts on craigslist or ebay, but I realized that my brother could use a bike to build up and ride with his 4 year-old, who just got a bike for his b-day.

If your brother decides not to take the Trek, I'm interested.

I thought the frame and fork would barely be worth the cost of shipping it across the country.

Yeah, they're marked 560mm (I used to use 580) but they came with the donor bike, so I figured I'd try them before spending any more money.

Let me know what you need - I have a box full of bars and other parts.

Maybe not, but for some reason I really want it.

As crazy as that sadistic ride sounds, I may just be interested. What are the details? And do you guys have a couch so I don't have to wake up at 4am to be there? More likely though, I'll find something a little closer to home for now.

You're awesome! If you happen to have a flat bar 580mm or wider, hold onto it for me if you don't mind. I think with my comfort on 40cm road bars, though, I'll probably be happy with the 560.

If you like it that much, buy my brother a complete bike with at least Alivio components and I'll include the V-brakes and derailleurs and cover the shipping myself. Really, if he changes his mind, you'll be the first to know.

I think the whole loop ends up being about 25 miles with 4,000 feet of climbing. Blackstar isn't too bad, once you're on the Main Divide there are some pretty steep sections. The Motorway descent is fun? Here's a video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo5vOq3O7G0

Jason (chucklehead) and Jeff (jsigone) are my victims...ummm...I mean, partners in crime this week!

Once upon a time I ran a bike that came with 560s, bought from a racer gal, but not for long. Run mostly 650-680 lengths these days.

Like I told mzeffex, a complete bike with Alivio would suffice. Otherwise, my brother gets first crack at it. Even though he's only giving me a set of used golf clubs in return, allowing him to ride alongside his 4 year-old son is priceless. But seriously, I'll let you guys know if he changes his mind.

As for the bike stand, I kinda use it. besides, it's about 20 years old and only still clamps because I J.B. Welded a nut to the stripped receiving side.

I assume that's a riser bar, though, right?

It was kind of a joke, but if you want to offer $300 in cash, I'll go order my brother a Bikes Direct bike the next day.

Which one? I have flat bars, low rise bars, medium rise bars, one recent fairly high rise (and cheap) bar....just depends on the application. Need a variety of setups for a variety of bikes...

I just assumed any of your 650-680 bars were risers, but apparently I was wrong.
