Sram PG-950 9 speed RD question.
 

When I bought the rear wheel I am using the guy gave me the 9 speed cassette that was on it also.

So I am thinking about making my bike a 1x9 for a bit and curious as to what works/doesn't work. I have a gift card to Jenson so something from there would be cool. Out of these choices are there ones that work and ones that don't? This is my first hoo rah with gears so pardon the noob nastyness. These say 9 speed is there a superior or anything to watch for?

if you want to use either of those sram rear derailleurs you will need to use sram shifters with them.

Yeah, the sram x.# series RD requires you to purchase the sram shifter, the cassettes are mostly (all?) interchangeable same with the 9-speed chains. The
8-speed stuff is getting harder to come by, so 9-speed might be your only choice, it isn't automatically superior aside from the extra cog.

but with a himano derailleur i can use a sram shifter? or i need a shimano one as well?

Shimano derailleur can be actuated by either Shimano or Shim-compatible (2:1) SRAM shifters (Attack, Rocket, etc). Odd-number SRAM (3.0, 5.0, etc) and Xs (as mentioned above) need 1:1 SRAM shifters.

There are some lower-end sram(attack) shifters which can operate a shimano mech, but the cog indexing won't match if you use the x.# series since they pull the cable 1:1 and shimano rear mechs count on the cable being pulled 2:1

ah ha here we go. This is the part i was trying to figure out online and couldn't seem to do it. To make things easier just stick to the same brand and i should be good but if i don't i need to make sure the ratio is correct. Trying to do a cyclocross race on the 16th and i want some gears...

Haha, yes... but, I confess I haven't tried the setup you want to use.
