I had the same problem getting ski boots recently, and especially go through this with car mechanics, as well as bike stores.
It's rare to find someone in retail who isn't a salesman ******/talks to you like a human with a brain/doesn't get offended easily.

That often seems to be the case in my experience, at least. Even when you know you're stuff it's a nightmare most of the time to deal with these ppl.
It makes me overjoyed when I find someone who actually does their job right though. Most either don't care, don't know, try to pull one over on you, or a combo of all 3.

Don't forget to do your online reviews of the stores you went to if possible...or call the customer service headquarters for a rebate/refund/gift cert....
