Back into biking...

Hello all--

I'm somewhat new to the mountain biking world. I rode BMX hardcore as a kid and I've decided to pick back up biking. I own a 09 Trek 6000. The components are decent for my experience, but I am looking to upgrade. I am looking for websites and/or information that "grades" or "ranks" various components...a good, better, best type of thing. Any direction or information will be great.

Thanks to all.

First thing you need to do is figure out what kind of mountain biking you are going to do and then start learning about the bikes in that category. Most people split riding into cross country (XC), All Mountain, free ride, and downhill. Use Google, you will find a lot of information about them. Once you find your type of riding, you can start focusing on the bikes in that category. Most bikes will come in a variety of levels with different components. These are easy to understand. Just go to the websites for SRAM and Shimano (bicycles, Shimano makes lots of stuff), and learn the component levels from top to bottom. Most pre-built bikes will mix and match to save costs. It is common to do things like putting a Deore XT (better) rear derailleur with Deore (good) shifters.

Again, Google is your friend.

Good to know what style of riding suits you best indeed...but the best way to do it is to flog the crap outta that 6000 until the cost of repair is superceded by the real necessity for the purchase of a new bike.

Quick answer to your Q:
Shimano levels componentry--
XTR (weight weenie XC crap)
XT
Saint (XT level but for freeride / dh)
SLX // LX (basically equal level...SLX is more trail worthy...LX is more of a "trekking" group)
Deore
All else IMO should not be installed on a serious MTB

SRAM:
X.0 (weight weenie XC crap)
X.9 (~XT level)
X.7 (~LX / SLX / Hone)
X.5 (prob Deore level)

IMO there are 4 levels:
XT, X9, LX, X7

LX and X7 are freakin' bomber for the coin. If you have money to burn...XT and X9 are excellent quality.
