Yeah, Another Noob

Im sure im beating a dead horse asking a question like this but, ive exhausted my search efforts.

I was into BMX during my early years of Jr. High and High School (im 25 now). I have a cheap mtb now that i just dink around town on. Last week, for no reason at all, i got bit by a mountain bike bug, and now i want to get into it. Im very interested in the Freeride, Dirt Jump, Urban Freeride styles. Ive been lurking around craigslist trying to find a worthy hardtail. Im trying to be as logical as possible in this purchase, because the reality is.... A) Ill probably trash the bike learning....or B) My ADD will get the best of me and ill loose interest. So if i buy a cheaper used bike and one of those two things happen, i can upgrade at that point, or not be upset i spent alot of money just to have it sit.
My options are pretty thin around here but here is one ive come across. I seem to read about the Hardrocks alot, so it seemed like it might be a decent foot in the door. However, this one looks like it might be an older model?

Another Option? I cant tell the model, though.

Please shoot me your opinions, thanks!

Yes...dead horse...beaten.

Both of those bikes suck for your purposes. You will taco the wheels on the first ride. You will buy new wheels and snap a pedal spindle, crank arm, or frame tube.

What's your price range, how tall are you, how much do you weigh, and what exactly constitutes "Freeride" to you?

5' 10" Just over 200lbs. Not a fat 200lbs either. Do to my location trails would be mild at best, but the "urban assult" style of riding has really caught my eye. Ive seen it called alot of different things and i guess im not sure which one is the most common. (hucking, urban mountain biking, etc). Budget is hard to put a number on i guess, like i said before im sure ill either destroy the bike as i learn or it will end up collectiong dust in the corner of the garage. I would rather spend a few hundred now, and find out i actually stick with this sport and upgrade as my skills progress. Rather than spending a grand or more now just to have it become a conversation piece. However, if i had to put a number on it i would say 500, maybe 600. I figure this bike isnt going to see anything too crazy im going to have to develop my balance, confidence, and skills before i start doing anything wild. And if im still into it at that point, that means im going to stick with it and its time to upgrade.

If you're looking at mostly urban and DJ, you'll want to decide whether you want to go 24" or 26", rigid or suspended, and SS or 1x9 (or whatever). If you're going to take it on trails though, you're a big enough guy that I'd push you towards 26" and suspended. Gearing is up to you. Ideally something from a dedicated DJ company like BlkMrkt, SuperCo, Union Street, Atomlab, Dobermann, or Tonic Fab will show up on Craigs (among others...those just seem to be the ones people talk about the most, and I'm assuming the most likely to show up used). Just make sure it's not destroyed because people tend to beat on bikes like that. You may also be able to find a closeout Norco Ryde, Eastern Nightrain/Thunderbird, Rocky Mountain Flow, Jamis Kromo, KHS DJ, or something else (just off the top of my head) for your pricerange. Also, DMR and NS make some stuff that's nice, but a little less expensive than some of those big hitters I listed above. And if you're going to take it to the skate park, look at a DMR Drone or NS Holy (rigid 24" cromo DJ's that feel like big BMX bikes). Cheap, small, easy to throw around, and bomber.

First two are geared DJs (DJ200 is nicer, but you'd have to figure out if the medium fits).
Next three are SS 26" DJs with front suspension.
Next two are SS 26" rigid DJs.
Last is an AM HT.
