xc trail riding shorts

Hello, i haven't posted on here in so long. Haven't been on a bike in so long, but that will change very soon. Once i get home from school i'l be on the trails every morning.

But, to get to the point.

I have a pair of spandex shorts with a pad in them for "comfort in the saddle." But id like to invest in a pair of shorts to throw on over the spandex.

Something that i can climb in on hot days, ones that aren't bulky and protective. I'm not going to be doing nuts downhill riding i just need a good pair of shorts for overall xcish trail riding.

Most likely something i could figure out on myself but im hoping someone will have some worthwhile advice.

thanks!

I got a pair of REI hiking shorts to go over my spandex. I seems to work great. And the price was very reasonable.

Why? The longer your rides get, the tighter you will want your shorts to fit. Do a 50 mile xc and any fabric movement is just going to chafe you badly. Granted, your rides may not be that long, but it is just an example to show why we do wear spandex shorts for xc. There is no reason to cover them other than fashion/modesty. Check out photos from an endurance ride like the Leadville 100 and see what people are wearing.

I know other will differ on this and maybe you just aren't comfortable in spandex, but adding a second pair of shorts only detracts from the performance of your clothing.
