1X9 without chain guide?

anyone doing/ done it?
my hardrock sport recently had the big and little rings bent, and i don't want to put any more money into it (saving up for a new bike). right now i have the front derailleur, shift cable, small, and large ring all removed. i took 5 or 6 links out of the chain (enough to make it tight on the big cog) and it shifts great. it works fine except the chain hops off every now and then. i cannot take any more links out of the chain, or it will be too tight.
is there a cheap chain guide i haven't been able to find? all of the ones i have seen are ridiculous downhill/ freeride $150 jobs. are there little plates i can mount on each side of my chainring to keep it from hopping? i know i have seen them for 5 bolt chainrings, larger 4 bolt chainrings, and the small chainrings. never seen a set for the middle ring, though. :(

I run a 1x9 on my bad-weather commuter. I get a chain jump only now and again, and I have one of these to try out, but haven't yet:

DMR Chain cage

Also, what size is the chainring? You could get a bash guard + third eye combo. I went with the chain cage above because I'm running a 48t Sugino track crankset and I couldn't find a bash guard large enough...

(edit)
OR, since you pulled the inner and outer chainrings, could you put two bash guards on --one on the inside, one on the outside?

Darth_Firebolt 04-24-10 02:50 PM

it's a 32 tooth. will the third eye reach out from the seatpost far enough? i thought about that, but i didn't think it would reach far enough to do anything...
:edit: saw your edit, but i can't find a bashguard that fits the spacing on the small ring. :[

Put the front derailleur on. That will work.

Wow that looks pretty!

Darth_Firebolt 04-25-10 04:53 PM

sweet! thanks!
my frame should have enough clearance for that blackguard, right? it looks like there are some spacers on your BB...
how often (rarely) do you drop your chain with that setup?

Zillon 04-25-10 05:13 PM

I run the N-gear Jumpstop on my bike, and love it.

Best part? It only costs ~10 bucks.

The outer bashguard is the BBG superlight bashguard, which will run you about 18 bucks @ bbgbashguard.com.

To echo what zillon said: N-Gear Jump stop, BBG outer ring, and you are in for supah' cheap.

And, it just plain works.

This is the truth. I've put a good 250 miles on this particular setup in some of the roughest chain-tossin' terrain in central PA, and I have no complaints whatsoever.

ed 04-25-10 06:35 PM

My friend had the N-Gear and it dropped on him 3-4 times that I can remember. It happened when he was pedaling over rough terrain and the forward motion helped the chain pry the stop over. (weird)

The Blackguard has never dropped a chain. Regarding frame clearance...there was somthing up with the 2004 Komodo frame. Those BB spacers that are on there are actually supposed to be there per Shimano factory spec's. The HTII style cranksets require 2 drive-side / 1 non-drive spacers for a 68mm BB shell.

That said...my new frame (burlier 2005 Komodo) is thicker and beefier...yet has much more clearance. I've actually moved spacers around with 1 drive side and 2 non-drive...and still had ample frame clearance. I think the 2004 was a smidge crooked.

Anyhoo...Blackguard is cheap and effective. Never dropped.

i'm going to try the BBG + N-Gear, and if the chain still drops, i'll spring for the blackguard. hopefully it will fit my frame if i need to get it. : /

Definitely worth the try...I've got an N'Gear and would have stuck with it if I'd ordered the proper mount diameter:lol:

if i don't like the n-gear, i mail the parts back and all i'm out is shipping to get it back to him. :D
what size did you order/need?

I don't recall...I'll measure it tonight.

thanks, guys! 14 miles of rocky, rooty singletrack and it didn't jump off once with the n-gear and bashguard. A+
