Should I upgrade bottom bracket?

I'm replacing my my old crankset with Deore XT, it comes with a new bottom bracket but is it worth upgrading the bottom bracket from the one that comes with the XTs? BB's seem to be relatively inexpensive, if I can shave some weight for not a whole lot of money I will do it now while its all gonna be apart anyway. Any recommendations?

I've heard Hope Hollowtech is a worth while upgrade

The XT bearing quality is fine (I'm assuming you're speaking of current XT cranks, M770 series). Not a lot of weight savings or performance improvement to be had with external bearings in any case IMO. A set of Hope external bearings (steel) will cost at least double the XTs, the ceramics triple or quadruple, so what's inexpensive?

I know that a dictionary is a worthwhile investment.

And that would be Hollowtech II in any case since Hollowtech would use an Octalink bottom bracket....

Yes it's the M770. I picked up the crankset (come with the BB) from Performance bike for like $160 shipped. I got a good deal on so I figure if I can upgrade for $100 or less I'll do it.

dminor - despite added a space you still managed to read and understand exactly what it meant, yet instead of any sort of legitimate answer you decieded to be a tool. Congrats, we are very impressed with spell check ability. If you have nothing to add to topic GTFO

But what are you "upgrading"? You won't feel the difference between the various bearings unless you take the chain off and like to spin the cranks in the stand...the new Shimano external bearings will not allow the cranks to spin in the stand with the chain off like a cartridge bearing bb, let alone a cup and cone bb, but the difference while riding is negligible and the Shimano bearing seals will loosen up a bit in time too so that you can stare at your crank in a stand later and be more impressed if you want to....

EDIT: I removed my previous comment because, admittedly, it was a bit harsh. Darkstars, suffice it to say people joke around on here a lot, and someone correcting your English isn't anything to get all sore about.

I'm not soar about it, my feelings aren't hurt and there was nothing harsh about it... but my point is the same, if you have nothing to contribute then don't contribute. If you want to be usefull and throw in a joke then fine, no complaints.

Try a spell checker. Although due to context may not have picked up soar vs sore, but would have gotten "usefull" (should be "useful").

I tend to contribute where I want, when I want (which often has a tendency toward the ill-timed, the irreverent or both) and let the court of public opinion decide whether or not it's usefull (sic).

. . . or in the words of the immortal Firesign Theatre (Escaping from the Declining Fall of the Roaming Umpire; "TV or Not TV"): "That a jerk with a thumb [or in this case, a finger] should have such power."

Are you trying to say your useless so you try to get your post count up so you feel important?

Regardless, my question has been anwsered thanks to bikinfool. I have no need to come back and read any more responses so feel free to continue to work on your post count.

How nice of you to decide whether or not anyone else has the right to speak out.

I'm not going to 'contribute' to the question posed in this thread, as it HAS been answered -- though I COULD offer alternatives -- but to post or not to post is MY choice, that's one of the freedoms I wore the uniform to defend.

For the record, I vote dminor, and others here, post as much as they want whether it 'contributes' to the OP's question or not. Makes the forum much more interesting.

I agree, plus we need the misspelled posts from guys like Darkstars (plural even) with upgraditis who can't do their own research for the full entertainment package.
