LEADVILLE Trail 100

i searched the forums and didnt see an active thread for this, so thought i'd start one.

anyone else doing this in August? my first time, so if anyone with experience wishes to share- please chime in!

ive done a lot of research (talked with quite a few people that race it) and think i have a good idea as to bike setup, tire choice, course layout, check point distances and approximate times, etc...

but i'm looking for more personal info to get me ready for this. things like:

what were your clothing choices? what would you change?

any specific equipment you'd recommend?

the drop bag system- what did you put in each bag at each drop point?

any questions i should be asking?

all helpful advice will be greatly appreciated.

I'll broadcast it. Coming from the Black Hills if I can find my way out. Just a mid pack sport class rider.

Not sure where I am staying, but I did not want to stay at altitude. I plan to stay as low as possible.

Training has not been the best due to time constraints and lack of resources. I really wanted 12 hours or less to get the buckle...but not sure that will happen now.

Concerned about mountain sickness and will probably take some medication - acetazolamide/dexamethasone, we'll see if that helps

how about you?

I also have to do the Marathon and Silver Rush 50 to qualify. If I do not make those I will not do the Leadville 100

some other things for me:

I will DEFINITELY use fenders if rain looks like a given. They are cheap and can be ditched if you have to. I have done 100 miles in the pouring rain before without fenders -- never again.

Will likely wear long sleeve shirt under bibs and jersey like I usually do. I suppose I will wear bib pants if it is supposed to be cold. I will wear bib shorts under the bib pants. This has work great at other long races for me.

I do not care much about tire choice. I am most concerned with no flats. I use tubes and sealant. I will probably go around 23-25 psi using a FS bike.

Drop points I will use mostly Hammer Perpetuem and some all natural grass fed beef jerkey type foods for some solids. I will likely nibble on some free stuff along the way. I am assuming they have stuff at the stations? I like Lara Bars too.

I have emergency use shot bloks for hypoglycemia.

lastly, I will have my Lucky Charm that Dminor is supposed to be sending my way.

thanks for the advice. i'm coming in from florida. what is your time schedule/travel time to race day?

the reason i ask is- from all the research ive done (both personal experience and talking with olympic level athletes and coaches) altitude sickness kicks in somewhere between the 3 and 5 day. to truly aclimate, you need like 21+ days at altitude. so for guys that dont live in the friggin clouds- cold turkey is probably the best way to hit it. i'm flying in thursday night and we race saturday. i'm hoping that's cold enough turkey.

good suggestion about fenders.

as far as accomodations- im assuming Leadville is sold out. looking into Breckinridge. its close enough and big enough to still get lodging.

have you tried the medication (acetazolamide/dexamethasone) route before?
