hot weather gear

I prefer to use as little sunblock as possible, so I got to thinking a long sleeve shirt would be preferable, and I assume they make 'em for hot weather (I now know they do 'cause I googled it), but I've never used one in the heat before. After looking at brands like Nike, UnderArmour, and others from REI, Sierra Trading Post, and the like, I see there's some quality stuff for just this purpose.

However, I found this for really cheap.

It's 100% polyester, has the UV protection I'm looking for, and comes in light (heat reflecting) colors, but at that price, it almost seems too good to be true. Am I missing something? Anyone with experience riding with this kind of shirt have some insight?

EDIT: I've narrowed my choices to the following.

A known and trusted brand for $29.98 shipped.

Or an unknown for $18.01 shipped. I could even get two for $24.60 or $25.80, depending on color.

It seems like it'll let me check out in-spite of not buying for resale. I got all the way to the screen where I put in my shipping/contact info., but of course I don't want to give them my info. if I'm not actually going to buy from them. There is a field for business, but it's not a required field.

EDIT: I emailed the store and a rep. verified that I can order from them.

Should I take the chance?

I rather wear sunblock. What is it about sunblock you hate? Sunblocks have come a long ways and many are sweat proof and breatheable of course. I have some of the moisture wicking ls shirts but they still are no where near the effect of a ss shirt in 90 plus temps.

Mostly the inconvenience of applying it versus just pulling on a shirt, not to mention I prefer not to smear chemicals all over my body (nothing harsher than my all-natural deodorant, soap, and shampoo anyway).

Chemicals to protect against the worst cancer you can get (from the Sun) other than pancreatic as compared to chemicals we are inundated with just by breathing air********** Hmmm, give me sunblock. I am just jabbing you a bit here

I do understand what you mean as far as the inconveinence of having to do that but the alternative I hear about at my wife's oncology practice is far worse than the sunblock. The only problem with moisture wicking fabrics are that you have to get the UV fabric too! Without that, it still penetrates to a degree into the body.

Not sure then if you benefit as being cooler or not. If I were you and looking to have Sun protection without having to use sunblock is to look for a combo moisture wicking/UV fabric that would give protection from the UV rays too.

Good luck and hope you find what your looking for.

I live in the desert SW and 4evrplan, you live in Texas. The sunshine is wonderfully BRUTAL. BN is right, put up with the gooie stuff and avoid bad nasty stuff in the future.

I had a round of Efudex a few years ago. It is nasty. Wear the sleeves and goop yourself up, especially the back of the neck and the ears. This is an old guy talking-SO SHOW SOME RESPECT, how bout it?

BTW-thanks for the hookups on the shirts, even when its 110 many of us wear long sleeves.

Yeah Daspydyr I know what your saying. My last dermatologist visit I had two places, one on each ear, that were pre-cancerous from over exposure. Everyday before leaving home I use a SPF cream and coat my ears and exposed facial area subject to this now. I know it is a pain to do all this pre-ride stuff but man, cancer is a nasty nasty disease for sure.

My epitat I hope reads one day................"Here lies Mike; oh how he loved to bike; but along came a bear with a hungry grin; and Mike is no longer with us nor will he be again!"

Not............."Mike loved to ride his bike and not wear his sun protection factor; now we store his urn and cancer ridden remains in the trash compactor!"

You get the picture!

What I use: https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...1511000_400061

It is a real cycling jersey, so it has pockets in back, and a collar tall enough to protect your neck.

Shim- nice option, now I am confused!

BN, how's this for a funeral dirge-

Send me to glory in a glad bag, don't waste no fancy coffin for my bones, just set me on the curb next Tuesday and let the Sanitation local bear me home.

If I should die upon the eve of Christmas, just set my baggy neath the Christmas Tree. When the boys and girls have opened all their goodies, the big surprise will be the death of me.

BUT hopefully we all have many sweaty miles in front of us.

Perfect. Have you tried any of the sweat-wicking UV protection kind before?

Oh, and I didn't mean to give the impression I was refusing to wear sunblock at all. If I'll be out in the sun, I'll still apply to any exposed skin. A long sleeve shirt is just that much less to apply.

P.S. Love the dirges.

I decided to take a chance on a couple of the cheapies. For about $12.50 each (after shipping), if they don't work for riding, I can always use them as casual wear. I'll let you know my impressions after I ride with them.

I never evben thought to look for moisture wicking in the summer. In the desert I can't wait to get a good sweat going, works as a natural cooling system for my cotton LS's. But a good moisture wicking at @$20-, thats a deal.
