chain slippage?

i am very new to biking to please excuse me if this is a stupid question. I just got my bike tuned up and took it on the trail today, my chain slipped about 3 times while i was going uphill. i figured it would be because i had to high of a gear so i made it lower and i had no problems.

i guess my question is is it normal for a chain to slip off the front derailleur due to being in a too high gear? is this a user error or mechanical error?

Define "chain slipping off the front derailleur".

-Is the chain sliding off of one sprocket and onto another, or off to the side out of gear? (sounds like your derailleur's not adjusted correctly)

Or it could be if your using your lets say your middle chain ring mainly that the teeth are wearing down and the chain ring needs replacing. Or your chain could simply need replacing. These are the simple fixes if they apply. Good luck.

the chain is completely slipping off the gears. the bike is brand new so the parts should not need to be replaced.

So it's sliding completely off the side of the chainrings?

If so, you likely just need to adjust the screws on the front derailleur, depending on which side it's sliding off of.

No, it's not normal. More information is needed, as drive train "slippage" could mean just about anything.

so it turns out that the front derailleur tuning was a little off and some of the teeth on the 3rd front chainring are damaged. my local shop bent them back but it still makes an awkward noise, i don't usually use the 3rd front gear anyway so i shouldn't have any problems.
