When Purchasing a New Bike...you might want to think about also purchasing???
This evening, after work, I put half of my money down on a new Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc. I KNOW for a fact that the LBS won't budge on their actual bike prices (already marked close to list price), and that they make their money on parts, upgrades, and services. Being the sales person I am, I thought that I would inquire about the possibility of getting some decent deals on "extras" that go with the bike purchase. This will be my second bike purchase from the LBS, and third overall, if you include the bike that I purchased which went bye-bye along with the girlfriend
.
Aaaaaanyway, I'm trying to decide which "extras" I should ask about when I go to pay off the bike tomorrow evening. I already know I'll be getting at least 1 year worth of free service on the bike. I already have quite a few bike related tools. I also have gloves, and a good lid.
Any suggestions? Tips? Maybe upgraded tires? Tubes? Pedals???
Thanks in advance

Assuming you already have a good helmet, gloves, and sun/clear glasses, I personally would look at the following in order:
1. Any replacement to the saddle or grips you may want
2. Camelbak or bottle cages
3. Spare tube/co2 pump/way to carry them
4. Bike shorts/jerseys
5. Clipless Pedals

Helmet is good,
and shoes if you do the clipless pedals,
and a car rack if you really want to...

I like this idea. I think I might switch up the grips at least!
2. Camelbak or bottle cages
I have a Camelbak that I currently ride with...about 6 years old...but it still works great. I could use a bottle cage though. Thanks.
3. Spare tube/co2 pump/way to carry them
I never thought of going teh CO2 route...but have a micropump already. I'll check it out though. Thanks.
4. Bike shorts/jerseys
I still ride in old, comfortable painting shorts. I guess I could check out the switch to padded Bike Shorts. I could use a jersey too.
5. Clipless Pedals
I'm a bit leery of switching to Clipless Pedals on the new bike. I'll probably check out this route after a bit of saddle time. Cool.

I picked up a helmet a month or so ago, and don't ride the rough stuff without it. Great suggestion.
I'm going to get a bit of saddle time in on this new bike before I think about clipless....but will keep this in mind.
I have a 1998 tacoma that I built my own bike rack into...or I just simplify and use straps when I'm going on a short trip =).
Thanks!

Good for those times you're raining blood and could use a drink to dull the pain.

Well looking through other peoples posts I saw some great suggestions that I'll exclude from my own. Personally, I would look for some shin/knee/elbow pads but I like to ride on some sketchy terrain so you can never be too careful! I'm not hardcore enough to not wear adequate safety. Maybe a mini multi-tool that you can carry in your hydration pack in case something goes wrong mid-ride. One time my seat came off along with the nut that holds it on and the multi-tool saved my arse, literally! If you properly maintain your bike that shouldn't happen though, I'm not always the most efficient rider.

I never thought about body armor until you mentioned it. I just glanced down at the few decent scrapes on my knees/shins that resulted from falls. Hmm. I'm not always the most efficient rider either =).
