traveling to ride
 

i don't care how many times it's been asked before, i'm asking again.

how close is your nearest trail, how far do you have to bike/drive to ride? are you lucky enough to be able to cycle to the trailhead, or do you have to drive? how often do you ride your nearest trail? do you drive 15 miles to ride your bike 7 miles? how far are you willing to travel to ride (not your nearest trail, just a trail you heard of that you want to ride)? what is the farthest you've traveled to ride your bike: how long to get there, how long did you stay and ride?

Unfortunately there's nothing close enough to ride to, but I am lucky that there are a lot of good trails in the area. I've got 3 good trails within 30 minutes, but nothing I could ride to. Another 6-8 good trails within an hour's drive.

Even though I live in the mecca of mtb heaven, I have to drive about 25 minutes to get to most trails and such. That is why I rode roadies for so long. I could leave my garage go for a leizure 25 miler in a hour along some of the prettiest mountain scenery in all western NC in the mountains! Kinda miss it in a way. But I do love mtb now I am back into it!~

For the last several years I have been into whitewater and it was never unusual to spend 2-3 hours getting to destinations, running shuttle and the like. An then I see posts on biking forums where people just flip out if someone mentions driving to a biking trail.

My minimum is about 15 minutes and the rest of the locals are 30 minutes to an hour. I go to Tsali and Dupont two or three times a year and that is 7-8 hours for me.

Besides, I need the drive time home to play tunes and call my buddy who didn't go, so that I can rub it in:p To me there is hardly a better time than the drive home. I usually have a grin on my face I can't get rid of:D

I have a 9 mile single track trail that runs along a small creek...4 miles from the house. I usually end up riding the 4 miles to the path, unless it's getting late in the day, and I don't feel like a night ride.

I can ride directly from my house, with snowmobile trails darting into the woods about 2 houses down from me. However a few times this summer, my wife and I have gotten a babysitter, threw the bikes on the rack, and driven off to try new places to ride. We've checked out some places as close as the next town over and as far as 45-min away. What we try to do is make a day of it by finding a brewpub or similar establishment (i.e. ones that don't mind customers with dirt on their arms, legs and faces) to visit afterward.

I can reach some ATV and old logging trails with about 1/2 mile road ride. That's not too bad, except that half-mile is a really steep uphill that I hate to do from a cold start.

The nearest singletrack is about 15 miles one way. So indeed, I often drive 15 miles to ride 8.5 miles.

There is some really great singletrack an hour away. I do not usually make the drive unless I'm headed into town for some other reason. I am not usually one to drive for an hour just to ride the bike. Mostly, I ride closer to home. It's just my way.

There is a park next to my neighborhood, I ride 1.8 miles to get there and the trail is 12 miles round trip. There is another park 7 miles away but I haven't ridden there as I usually ride near dark and don't want to be out on the streets at 10pm on my way home.

It varies. I can ride right from my front door to trails on my property and/or the ridges surrounding my place. Or I can ride a half-mile from my workplace in town to a decent trail network. Or I can cross town by bike or car in any direction for other trail networks that start within the city limits. Or I can drive 90 minutes to two different lift-accessed downhill venues. But I've travelled 1K mi. to ride too.

I have trails I can ride do and I like to do trails I have to travel to. My closest trails are Peter's Canyon about 3 miles away and Irvine Park 4 miles. I do either once or twice a week. I have traveled cross-country to the east coast to ride and to Europe. My favorite area is Utah, particularly Moab, a full day's drive away. I just finished up a trip on the North Rim grand Canyon and can't wait to go back. Tonight I am doing Limestone Canyon/Loma Ridge. I can ride there (it's about 8 miles away) but I rather spend my time riding in the Canyon so I'll drive there (15 minutes away at most). Most weekends I ride... mountain one day, road the other and generally travel to start/meeting place so the terrain varies each week. I live in a vacation destination spot (just north of Newport Beach, CA) so I don't usually travel far. And I can ride year around - another plus!

Closest - I can ride trails on my property, so 10 seconds from getting on my bike.
Driving to trails - most of the trail rides I like are anywhere between 10 minutes to 45 minutes from my house.
Shuttle trails - 10 minutes to 3 hours away. Well I guess if you include trips to dminor's place and the North Shore, it would be 9 and 10 hours, respectively.
Resorts - 2.5 hours to 10 hours away. Resorts that are a 2.5-3 hours away are usually day trips. Resorts 6 hours away are usually weekend/long weekend things. 10 hour resorts (i.e., Whistler) are usually at least a week (just because Whistler is awesome and has so much stuff) unless it's part of a bigger road trip.

I have flown about 3500 km to ride with mtnbiker66, gastro (cryptid01) and others in NC on a couple of occasions.

I've driven 3 hrs to ride. (with another 3 to drive home) I'm considering a slightly farther destination, about an hour or so further, maybe including a ferry ride.

I can drop into the Don trails with a sub-5-minute ride from work.

For lift-access DH I need a 1-2hr drive.

Road rides are from my driveway, of course. Actually, the largest group road ride in the city passes my driveway Sunday morning. Usually I'm still in bed at that point. Need to fix this.

I have several Front Range trails within 15-30 minutes drive, tons more if I choose to drive farther.

If i'm at work, it's a 2 mile ride... easily doable over lunch.
If I'm at home, it's a 12 mile ride or 10 mile drive to the same trails.
