Building a new Mountain Bike Park

I live on the outskirts of Nashville. Bull Run Recreational Area has a good amount of woods that has gone unused. I originally found a trail that the person who lives beside it had cut out to get to the river. I submitted a request to the parks and rec and got it approved to start clearing out trails. We do have one last submittal to clear it with the core of engineers since the area goes out to the Cumberland River. They don't think we'll have any issues with that. Since I have never done anything like this, where do I begin? I used to live beside Hamilton Creek and helped with maintaining it. Should I get in contact with some of those people at Hamcreek.com to find out more?

get ahold of the IMBA and see if they'd be willing to help.

IMBA is a great start. It has people you can talk to about how to build proper sustainable trails. In michigan, we also have the MI MBA that is very active and has people who have taken the classes and are well versed in trail building. Is there a local org that may be able to help?

really, someone helping would need to stake out the area to see the best way to lay out the trail. There are also considerations to be made about size and difficulty level.

Get help from the IMBA & post flyers all around asking for help each weekend. That's what they did with a trail that got established around here a few years back, & they ended up getting almost 1/4 of the 8 miles of trails done in one weekend because so many people came out to help.

Thanks for the info. I am going to one of the local bike shops where I have several friends and a couple of them are SORBA members who would know the right contacts.

It's getting some real momentum going. I have gotten in contact with a few IMBA guys, the city is for it, and we have 100 acres to use. The next step is getting the trail designed to submit to the city. I am getting very excited!

Cool! I assume the IMBA will help with the legal side of things? IE lawsuit prevention...

Not actively, no. But trails built to their standards are generally less susceptible to lawsuits.
