jamis bikes are they good?

I have the oppurtunity to purchase at Jamis Exile XC Mountain Bike 2006 model for $200. is this going to be worth. I have to drive2.5hrs each way to get it.

craigcraigcraig 08-29-10 03:22 PM

I have a Jamis exile 07 SS that i built up about a year ago now. It's been great. As long as you take care of it it will do anything you want except dance. depending on the components and what kind of shape the frame is in is what makes the price but if it's worth it to you and you will enjoy it then go for it.

Considering the component spec, that's a steal if it's in good shape.

cyclingd 08-29-10 03:54 PM

That's a good price - I think the rule of thumb is 1/3 original price, and you're below that, but 5 hrs is lots of driving.

Zephyr11 08-29-10 04:27 PM

BB5's and X.9? Great price. I'd drive it, as long as I was reasonably sure the bike would fit. I'm not a fan of the Axle though.

There is no rule of thumb. If it's in good shape and the only thing outdated is the paint scheme...then it's worth what you feel like paying. Ride it and see if you like it. If it were a 1998 model and the componentry and geometry have been outdated several times...then I'd say 1/10 the orig. price...but I'm a cheap prick.

The fork is on backwards...so who knows what else is wrong with the bike.

+1 lol

jasonball 08-29-10 06:36 PM

maybe that should raise a red flag with my interest?

ed 08-29-10 07:15 PM

As long as you're over 6'2", you will probably be alright.

jasonball 08-29-10 09:41 PM

6'3 so there I'm good. now yall mentioned the front fork is backward. that doesn't seem right.should I question it?

ed 08-29-10 09:54 PM

Check the drivetrain with a chain checker.
Check the fork tubes and headset for slop.
Check the bearings for smoothness and slop.
Same with the BB.

If it's all good...get it.

Now this is concerning. You'd better know how to tell when it's a seized shifter and when it's just a cable adjustment. With the broken brake lever and the backwards fork, I really wonder what else this guy has done to it.

Still a low price, but I would expect to put about that much into it yet again just to get it running as well.

jasonball 08-30-10 08:09 AM

so after all the replies I think I'm going to pass on this even though compents are good. the backwards fork and broken brake handle and me worries. who in there right might would but the fork on backward

samburger 08-30-10 01:25 PM

Jamisbikesyesthey'regood.

lofnsjoke 08-31-10 11:26 AM

the fork is not on backwards. the fork is a manitou. that brand of fork has a reverse arch design. also, a new brake lever can be picked up rather cheaply. the main concern i would have with the bike is does it fit?

never 08-31-10 12:03 PM

Did you look at the picture? I'm guessing no. Manitou is a reverse arch and it's to the front in the picture. Also, the front disc is obviously on the drive side of the bike and the caliper is on the front of the fork leg.

lofnsjoke 08-31-10 01:01 PM

there was a picture attached to this thread? stupid work filters.:crash: yeah guess the fork is backwards then if that is what is shown. my apologies never. still a backwards fork isn't all that hard to reinstall. hell, all you have to do is take off the stem and turn the fork around then reinstall the stem.

never 08-31-10 01:25 PM

You're correct, a backwards fork is an easy fix but combined with all of the other little maintenance issues with the bike, I would really question how hard of a life it's had. It wasn't properly put together and has been ridden until stuff isn't working. So who knows what actually needs replacing. If the bike was closer to the OP, it'd be easy to drop by and see what everything looks like. But 5 hours of driving is a little much.

cryptid01 08-31-10 04:36 PM

The fork isn't on backwards, the stem is.

jasonball 08-31-10 05:47 PM

once again thanks for all the advice. I told them good luck witht there sale that I'm going to pass. they got mad and stated that the bikes still sells brand new for 1100 and 800 used. that 200 was a good price. I kinda just laughed. i'm a person that does research and get advice about things I'm unsure of. they can keep the bike

ed 08-31-10 08:34 PM

The funny part is that the brake caliper being on the leading edge, and on the opposite side as the rear caliper...didn't even throw up a red flag for the owner? NumNutz.

jasonball 08-31-10 08:52 PM

from the other pics that i recieved via email. the frame looked pretty abused

phsyco4u2 09-17-10 08:51 PM
