anyone using bartape for grips?
 

I've not had goo luck with grips lasting worth a damn

my first set were the sock one and they lasted for a bit then would twist around and it drove my bonkers.. then I went to lock-ons which didn't move but I torn the rubber grip to pieces

so I had some spare bartape and decided I;d give that a shot

I tape them so when I pull back climbing it will tighten the tape and so far they don;t move and annoy me

just wondering if others have gone with bar tape instead of traditional mtb grips ?

I thought about it once and decided against it, but I wonder if you aren't death gripping the bars if you're destroying grips like that.

You've stumbled upon the secret to having no grip annoyance. Been doing this for years. Tuneable thickness and width, never slips around, easy to get on and off with out special tools or liquids. Enjoy, my friend.

no death grip here the rubber on the lock-ons was very thick.. therm stock bontrager grips were good till they started to slide all over the place

I tend to ride technical trials over all kids of roots up granite rock faces so I do allot of maneuvering and bar work... sometimes have to wheelie up on to rock faces in a climb as an example

I use those lizard skin grips - came stock with my bike. Only annoyance is how the ends are chewed up from hitting trees, but that'd happen with any grip.

Grips are a wear item, just like tires.

And just like tires, some grips last longer than others...just have to experiment to see what works for you.

My favorite grips don't last very long but the replacement grip is cheap so no big deal.

If road bar tape is outlasting MTB grips under similar usage, there was something wrong with the grips.

Damn, it's funny that you mention this because I've been dealing with my left grip slowly slipping off. I push it back but after riding for a bit, it starts to slip off again....

Anyone know how to keep it from doing this?

I used hairspray in my Yeti grips for my trek and they haven't budged yet.

Hairspray? So I take the grip off, spray the tube with hairspray, then put the grip back on?

^^ More tidy to spray it inside the grip and then shove it on. Clear acrylic spray works fine too if there's no hairspray around the house.

What Reb' said about gorilla snot (tried-and-true 3M automotive weatherstrip cement) holds true for sure. Only drawback is you have to always cut the grips off to replace 'em.

Gorilla snot is for guitar pick grip. Gorilla Glue = urethane glue.

My buddy has this problem with his quad. He uses a piece of wire (a bit finer than bailing wire) and wraps in around the grip close to the inside, then cuts off any excess and points the 'knot' into the grip so as not to cut himself. If I did this I would use full-fingered gloves in case of the cut. I would also try the hairspray thing first.

A-ha! Never heard that one. Only spent a few hours riding dirt bikes in the 90s.

Just trying to help out anyone that might be shopping via google. For those that are, don't buy something called Gorilla Glue (TM) or Gorilla Snot (TM) for attaching grips. The former works too well, the latter will insure they slip all over the place.
