What is your pedal/shoe combo of choice?
 

I have to say that for a novice like me, anything is an improvement.
Last summer I rode around the woods on shimano sandals & a beat-up set of candy c pedals. My toes didn't get smashed but they did collect a little too much mud. This season its been flat Wellgo pedals & hiking boots. Both combinations worked out okay, but I want to start working on hopping obstacles & doing other manuevers. Now I am considering picking up a new pair of the Candy Cs or the Eggbeaters. The shoes I am looking for would do double duty for running (for cyclocross).

So this is just an informal survey. I'd appreciate your experiences.

ps I'm only partial to CBros bc I'm used to them.

i'm currently riding Specialized Low Pro Mag platform pedals with converse chuck taylor high tops on my turner 5 spot, or cheap toe clip pedals with converse chuck taylor high tops on my other bicycles (spot SS, voodoo bizango). my friend rides sun ringle zuzu platform pedals and vans.

Before the clipless nazi's come on, I will chime in.

Merrell Hiking Shoes and Azonic 420 Platforms (red). Best combo I have ever had (and yes, I have rode clipless for over 1000 miles.)

My only negative w/ platforms is they tend to shred my shins every other ride - which means I guess that I will need to get knee/shin guards (probably not a bad move since I scrape my legs up every single time I go out.)

I'm surprised that egg beaters haven't been mentioned, it seems like they dominated mtb for years.

Time ATACs and Northwave shoes for me. I switched to Time pedals after I got fed up with the performance of my old Shimano 535 pedals in muck and muddy trails back in the day. I've been a Northwave fan ever since I bought my first pair, the ones where the pair were mis-matched colors. Good ****e! I'd like to try out a pair of Sidi's once I need a new pair.

Clipless are better than whatever this guys suggests.

What you choose is up to you in terms of confidence and comfort. I ride clip-less for both xc/am and DH. I also use flats on the DH depending on the terrain, lots of fast tech rock gardens and/or mud, I go with flats. I'll also use them if I am just out screwing around and do not need the power that being clip-less adds.

As for what my combos are, I run 420's and 5.10's when running flats. Been using the 420's for a couple years now and both sets are still going strong after a lot of hard hits against boulders and such. They are also easily rebuildable and the pins remove from underneath so you can change them out even if you smash the tops. The 420's are also one of the lightest flats out there at 430g/pair.

I use 5.10's just because I get a great deal on them but they do offer a bit more grip then most with their Stealth rubber although I would like it if they offered a stiffer sole, I find them to flexy and do not transfer power as well as a "true" cycling shoe does but then most riders would complain about them when doing a HAB.

For clipless I run the older CB Mallet M. and Shimano M122 shoes.
The older Mallets have a stiffer spindle as the spindle on the newer Mallets tends to flex a bit and I know a few riders who constantly snap them, constantly meaning once or twice a year. CB does have great customer service and replaces quickly though.
I run a xc typ shoe as it is lighter and offers a lot more stiffness in the sole then a "trail" type of shoe.


Funny you mention that, I was thinking off getting some Wingtips and putting the 5.10 rubber on the bottom. ;)

Pedals: Time ATACs. Incredibly reliable, good engage/disengage, great mud performance. Tried Crank Bros (Eggbeaters) for the last couple of months and don't like the mushy engagement or their reputation for blowing up. Gone back to the Times.

Shoes: Whatever fits and doesn't break the bank.

I was riding XT/SPD but began having problems on slow falls (like getting really hurt.) I tried that "campus" pedal with spd on one side, but the right cleat stuck bad. Now I am using a platform but as mentioned I get lots of red dots on my shins. I did like the ride quality using the spd's, climbing felt better, but I am nervous about the technical sections.

Having learned the hard way, the best solution to the platforms vs. shins conundrum is quality platforms and quality shoes.
