Bikes: A fat tire & a skinny tire & two others I loaned out

Well as stated in my other thread, I got a set of DT Swiss X430 rims laced to XT hubs. Gotta swap the 15mm hub for a standard 9mm, but I've got a friend who can help/teach me to do that. Already ordered it so when the new hub comes in, the old one will go for sale. It's an XT 15QR with a 6-bolt brake mount. I also found a pretty sweet deal on a saddle on chainlove that just came in today. The saddle is a WTB Silverado, here's a pic:

Still need to find out what size seatpost my bike has. Just haven't had the time to borrow my buddy's dial caliper. More pictures to come of the wheels.

You also have to consider if the two front hubs require the same length spokes.

New spokes and nipples may need to be considered in your pricing.

Yeah I'm just hoping for the best with that one. Either way, I'm still a little under my budget so spokes would only bring me back to where I was hoping to be by this point. And I always like having extra parts lying around. Might even keep the 15mm hub just in case I upgrade to a fork that requires it one day. You just never know.

Just use any of the online spoke calculators and enter your two hubs with the rims. Then you'll know if they're the same/close.

And keep in mind that, no matter how you try to wiggle around it, spokes cost $1+/ea - - plus nipples.I went down that road this summer; there are no cheap spokes.

According to this fella's XCT535 posting on another forum, it is 31.6

Got the wheels assembled. Well, got the tubes & tires on just for pictures. Still waiting on the front hub to come in, & then I can hopefully take it to a friend & have him teach me to relace it. Anyway, here are the pictures:

I'm very happy with it so far. Considering all I got with the wheelset & the price I paid, the hub trouble will still be well worth it. I almost wish these rims were V-brake compatible so I could slap them on the Wahoo for a lighter ride with much stronger wheels while I work on the KHS, but it was hard to pass these up. And it's just added motivation to finish the build.

I thought I was going to do a slow build too. It killed me to look at the frame so I sped things up in the end! It is a sickness for sure. Hey, have a great Thanksgiving to a fellow southerner!

I had been saving up to move out for the first time & get an apartment in Atlanta with a good friend, but they backed out for personal reasons. So I found myself with $400 of application/security deposit money saved up. Then I saw those wheels on CL & though, "Hey, I have about $400 to spare now!"

Hoping to get the fork for Christmas, & will be getting the crankset soon after. I had early May in mind for when this would be completely finished, but at this rate & with this level of disposable income, it looks like it'll be more like early February. So it'll be done in plenty of time for fair weather! And speaking of cranksets, what do we think of SLX? Jenson has it for $100 I think, but I can't help but wonder if it's worth saving up for an XT. Other recommendations are welcome as usual.

Anyway, happy Thanksgiving!

Sam-

I have only the SLX RD on both bikes and I have to say.............nice RD for the monies. Depends on how much more you have to save. I really like the SLX lineup. I think it depends on what your willing to spend. But really no complaints what so ever here! Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Forgot to add...........I went with RaceFace LE cransets on both my bikes. It was a combo of two things that influenced my decision on that. 1- Being that the RF LE was the right price at the time and great reviews. 2- Color cooridination of course!

It is all about the bling sometimes!

I was looking at the LX, but the SLX is only $20 more & would look so much better with my bike. Like BN said, sometimes it's all about the bling. What I don't understand is why they give the SLX the badass aesthetics of the XTR, & have the XT looking just like the LX. But hey, I'm not complaining. Just means I get a crankset that looks much nicer than it actually is.

Hallelujah!

https://www.hucknroll.com/marzocchi-4...rrProd=MRZ0003

It's still a bit pricey but Christmas is just around the corner & grandma keeps bugging me to give her a list. Here it is.

It also allows me to keep my 15mm hub up front. Turns out my friend can't lace wheels so that's $100 saved from the new hub & LBS labor, more like $130 if the spokes didn't fit. Comes out almost as cheap as the Tora Solo Air I was planning on getting. Sweeet!

If you have to, wheels are easy to relace. Just spend some time searching online and you can do it yourself. I used Sheldon Brown's to learn how to do it the first time.

When I finish the bike, I have every intention of learning to lace/true with the wheels of my old bike. I decided to build a bike instead of buy a complete one with the hope of never having to pay a LBS for labor again, & I plan to see that through. But either way it's well worth the money for a nicer fork. I was just saying a few weeks ago how nice it would be if a Marz 33 or 44 would go on sale, so when I saw this as one of the links on chainlove it seemed like a godsend.

Very nice build so far. You should be able to Google that frame and find all the specs for seat post size and BB size etc. For the record I am building a new 29er hard tail right now> So I am combing the iterwebs for all the best deals daily just like you. I found a sweet set of XT clip-less pedals on eBay for $76 shipped. (it looks like they jacked the price up $3 from what I paid)
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=270669587200

I see your wheel set came with some rotors and a cassette, thats a bonus.
on a side note:

The LX cranks at Jenson for $79 are VERY nice and no need to upgrade to the SLX. They have a very nice finish to them as well. I have them sitting on the workbench waiting for an install.

Great deal on the frame and fork. What kind of head set are you looking for? they had some good ones for around $30 on eBay -the FSA orbit is a good Chris king clone.

I agree, the LX is a nice crankset...I'm half way considering it myself...but I'm worried about bending a spindle as well as a lack of pedal inserts. SLX would suit my needs better unless I put the LX on the Komodo.
