Anybody thinking of building up a new Surly Troll?

I am. I'm thinking of one as a commuter/grocery getter/truck. I love this frame.

Anyone know if these are available yet? Surly website said November. I'd like to get one of these and use an Alfine8 internal geared rear hub with disc brakes. No derailers. I'd use it for a dirt road or back roads kind of bike, and also a utility bike. I have a Surly CrossCheck with Nexus8 internal hub that makes a great commuter bike.

I'm not thinking about it.

Thinking of taking this across country but not in the traditional sense of the trek. Won't be in the saddle more than 4-5 days a week. Gonna zig zag the states and see/do as much as I can. Excited for pavement as much as I am dirt/gravel. Can't see how it would be any slower than a Big Dummy (www.jessesteiner.com is my hero). Concerned with the short headtube keeping my...dare I say drop...bars low. and the short wheelbase and chainstay. Any thoughts on how stable it will be?
This is what I imagine the bike might look like with drop bars! Now lets just see if Surly will give you that much steerer tube! http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=186571 |
A friend of mine should be getting his this week.

I just picked up an 18" Troll frame this evening from LBS, which was ordered 3 weeks ago. The LBS just finished cleaning paint out the BB threads and preparing the edges of the headtube and BB shell. It will take me a few weeks of spare time to turn my box of spare parts into a bike ready to roll. This will be my first disc brake bike build, so hopefully all goes well (Avid BB7 mechanical). I have Shimano LX front and XT rear hub that I am going to lace up to Sun Equalizer 31 rims. I'm going to run plump tires on this bike with stock Surly rigid fork (2.35 to 2.5 width tires, haven't decided which ones yet). Shimano LX derailleurs, low "bling" factor. I'll take some pics while building and post in early February.

zephyr, mechanicals suck to adjust since only one pad moves. other than that good luck

Its a great looking frame. But it is a specific slot usage for a bike. Too narrow for me. But it sounds like a great build. Keep those pictures coming.
