Junk is in the eye of the beholder. But remember, you get what you pay for.

squirrel is rite...thats probaly the best line ive heard so far..

ChiliDog 10-09-04 09:40 PM

Some are, some aren't. The "pro" line has better frames and better components. I've seen some pretty decent Mongoose bikes starting in the $300 range.

The ones at Wal-Mart are crap, IMHO.

Hopper 10-09-04 09:55 PM

Mongoose suck, Mongoose Pro are their better bikes. They still aren't the best bikes around, but they have some good bikes. Their topline DH bikes (ie NXDH and new DH (only avaliable in Aus.)) are excellent.

The bike I'm getting pretty soon is going to be a Mongoose Pro. However this ain't no normal bike. It is handbuilt in the same place they make Crawtworks bikes and there are only 18 (I think it's 18) that were made. They were originally going to make two, one for the two Mongoose Sponsored DH riders in Australia, but one of those guys asked them to make another 10 or so for the Australian public.
Mmmmmmmmm....... can anyone say 6-10 inches of adjustable travel. :D

DjRider04 10-09-04 10:27 PM

I love how "Mongoose" sponsored riders all ride Turner frames rebadged as "Mongooses" rofl

Hopper 10-10-04 12:38 AM

True, EC Carter rides the Turner. I didn't realize they actually rebadged them.

I can: "6-10 inches of adjustable travel you lucky bastard!" ;)

So you are getting the Mongoose Hopper? Cool! I didnt know they only made 10 or so. That makes it even cooler!

DjRider04 10-10-04 09:19 AM

There was another Mongoose that was just a rebadged 5spot that ive seen, and I believe ive seen one like the Rail also. I think it was EC's 4x bike.

Hopper 10-10-04 05:39 PM

EC uses Mongooses in 4X. I think he uses a Grand Chamonox(sp) or something similar to that, but in 4X he uses a Mongoose.

Yeah, most likely, done a lot of talking with Matt at Track, and I'm getting the bike way cheap, so basically I'm getting a free frame. Unfortunately, I will never use the bike in 10 inch mode as the compression ratio changes so I need a different spring, I'd need a 24inch rear wheel and it puts the BB WAY HIGH. But I'm sure I may use the 9inch travel :p but apparently the best setting for DH (geometry wise) is a bout 8.5 inches.

Sounds good- Matt is a wicked guy.

For those who dont know what bike we're talking about, here's a pic. But please note- Hopper will be getting one with Junior Ts (Built Kit 2), not Dorados (Build Kit 1)

Hopper 10-10-04 05:51 PM

Yo where's the pick, Oh yeah and if he's feelig really lazy, he said he'd rip the Dorados off the one in the shop and chuck the Jnr T's of the wall on it. That means better hubs and better chaindevice. :p

As opposed to ordering one in from Sydney and having to pay for shipping and Blah, Blah ,Blah. I hope he's feeling lazy.

anthonaut 10-10-04 05:54 PM

Yeah hahaha. And you get it quicker. But then again, i dont think the Juniors on the wall are 20mm axle are they? I think they're just standard QR.

Hopper 10-10-04 05:58 PM

nope, they are 20mm.....

Snap

anthonaut 10-10-04 05:59 PM

Okay, if you say so.

Wait, Im not quite sure I understand this, are you saying you want a jr. T over a Darado? I thought Darado's were much better.....

Hopper 10-10-04 06:26 PM

Hell I want a Dorado over a Jnr T but I don't have an extra $2000 to spend. If I get the proper kit with the Jnr T's I get one or two lower components, ie chaindevice, cassette, hubs... But If he is lazy he will put the Jnr T's on the better build at no extra cost. I like being friends with a guy who works at a bike shop. :D

As the great me said when i posted this: "If it ain't mine, it ain't fine!" :D

It may not be as good as your Demo-9, but I dont think you should dismiss it as junk. The mongoose pro looks pretty sweet.

hooligan 10-10-04 08:59 PM

Kool! Mongoose PRO eh? I don't know...that logo looks dodgy, and I don't like how the bike looks overall. But what do I know about geometry?

I don't think it is made by mongoose...rebadged :)

Hopper 10-10-04 11:50 PM

Actually, I was talking to the guy who they originally made this for (Steve Marsh) and he said that Mongoose Australia asked him and I think a guy calkled Moore what they wanted for in a bike and geometry etc. They came up with a design and eventually drew up that bike. They then persuaded Mongoose to make more than two bikes. They then went to a factory (coincidentally the factory that makes Craftworks and they said this bike was overkill). The factory then made a batch of 18 and that bike was the product.

So technically it's not made by Mongoose, but it was designed by Mongoose and not some other company. Now all Mongoose has to do is do the same process again but then make more than 18 bikes and then they will actually have some good bikes.

Your Demo 9 has nine inches of travel? The Mongoose has 10. Im not saying which is better but Mongoosepro do make some good bikes.

Dannihilator 10-11-04 12:30 PM

So, and the Karpiel Apocalypse has 13" of travel, none of them will ever pedal as nice as a hardtail though.
