SRAM X7 Kit - To buy or not to buy?

I am just in to riding and don't have a whole lot of money to spend on equipment and found a guy on craigslist selling;

* X7 3x9 Trigger Shifters
* X7 Long Cage Rear Derailleur
* PG-970 9-speed Cassette 11/34t
* PC-971 9-speed Chain w/Gold Powerlink

for $135 but I talked him down to $115. It doesn't have a front derailleur, but is it still worth buying or can I find this if I wait for cheaper or better equipment for same price? Any feedback will help, thank you.

I run a SRAM X-7 rear derailleur and X-5 trigger shifters and they have never faultered over 6 months of use. I say its a good deal, but i would get some detailed pictures of them before you buy them to make sure the teeth are straight and the derailleur isnt bent.

X7 is pretty nice stuff for the coin. I installed an X7 train in my friend's bike a couple years ago and it's still shifting flawlessly. (mostly b/c I installed it )

I just saw a NEW X7 rear D for 29.99 at REI in the parts window in the shop section.

I look for deals on used stuff all the time but almost always come away disapointed when I get used cassettes, chains or rear Ds. I buy used Frames and brakes - (I can change the pads) but when it comes to used cassettes and chains I have learned my lesson.

look to ebay for NEW X7 stuff at that same price. or take you time and shop well on the interwebs.

https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/129...sette-2010.htm

an LX chain for 23.98

here are X7 triggers for 39
https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/197...Speed-2010.htm

Rear D x7 for 44.99
https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/199...lleur-2010.htm

138 for BRAND NEW stuff that you know will last a lot longer than the used stuff. that is just 3 dollars more than his orginial price. it is a false econmoy to save 20 buck and have to replace it way earlier and buy a replacement new.

That is the FIRST store I looked at - I bet you could dig a bit and find better prices - look to JensonUSA
Bluesky and universal bikes along with Performance bikes and Bike nashbar - Performance and bike Nashbar almost always have 10 to 20% off coupons too if you look.

oh and
FREE SHIPPING at price point for ups ground until Feb 1

Thank you everyone for the responses. I am glad to hear that the quality of the components are really good. I ended up buying the parts from the guy for $115 and they were all brand new. I installed them all but don't have the front derailleur, so I can't comment on how they work. Thanks again for the help and information.

I didn't know about the used components, but I now know and will be cautious in the future. I was fortunant that these components were brand new. Thanks again.
