Disc brake advice needed
Hi all. I want to put a front disc brake on my mtn bike (no rear tabs). It is a ~2000 Litespeed Ocoee with a 2007 Fox Float RLC32 80mm (fork has both v-brake bosses and disc tabs). My V-brakes aren't cutting it in the crazy forests here in NC coupled with my current mass (all muscle of course ;) ) of 100kg (220lbs). I'd like to spend no more than $200-250 for the front brake since I need a new wheel to go with it too (feel free to give opinions on that as well). I ride mainly xc type riding with some all mountain type thrown in periodically. Can I go bigger than 160mm? At my weight I'd assume I'd want to, but are there any limitations set by my fork? Anyway thanks for the advice and education. FWIW I have brake boosters on the current XTR V-brakes too...

I've had issues with Avid rear brakes being a tad noisy...but not the front. Therefore...I'd highly recommend the Elixir's. Very powerful.
You can also get and adapter from A2Z components that will allow you to put a rear disc on your non-disc frame. |
Yeah, there are limitations... go look it up on fox's site. Not sure it applies for mechanicals though(usually only a size is given) for hydros you def'n want to follow the manufacturer spec.

You can go 185 with no problems.

Thanks. So, for example, will a off the shelf Elixir CR 185 fit or do I need some sort of adapter? Thanks again.

Order it off the shelf with the 185 adapter.
Here's the rear adapter: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5DOY3zh3nF...r+DSCF1837.jpg |
