my thoughts on the gary fisher rumblefish 29er
so today after work i finally took out the gary fisher rumblefish 29er, it was in my size, and here is what i thought about it....
i am a small man, 5'5". it felt like a big bike to me, sort of like how i felt a bazillion years ago going from a bmx bike to a huge 26" mountain bike. so perhaps that has something to do with it, perhaps if i rode a 29er all the time i would get used to it, but it just felt...a bit awkward.
it climbed great. pedaling uphill seemed a breeze. it was a sturdy solid bike and wasn't uncomfortable at all, not once, but it wasn't super fun comfortable either. it was pretty neutral, bland. i could ride it all day if i had to, but i didn't want to.
what i didn't like about it was it seemed slow, like it didn't want to go downhill or through turns. it felt slow and sluggish, and the rear felt just a slight tad sketchy, only once or twice, not the whole time. i didn't like how it turned and i didn't like how it went downhill. i didn't have a problem going downhill, it just seemed slower than other bikes.
hucking off stuff it landed solid. twisty turny singletrack it handled ok, but again, not the fastest.
this bike would be great for someone new to mountainbiking, a first time rider, someone who isn't trying to rip as fast as they can, and just wants to ride at an easy pace, someone who is going to ride fire roads a lot, or for someone who is taller, close to and over 6 ft. i honestly believe if i were taller i would appreciate the bike more. but pushing those huge tires was a hassle for me and my little legs. those tires like to roll over stuff, but they are not in a rush going through corners or going down a rocky hill.
as i've said before, i have friends who love their 29ers and ride everything on them with no problem, and they are all much taller than i am.
these are just my opinions, this is how the bicycle felt to me, you might have a totally different opinion of the bike and you would be totally correct.
i would like to hear your thoughts on the bike, if you have any experience with it.
as a side note, if you are thinking of buying a new bike, the only way to get the right bike for you is to ride as many as you can and find out what works for you.

I'm not much taller than you, 5'6" here, and I really enjoy riding my 29ers. After a couple of rides, I'm really comfortable on technical trails. You have to adjust to the handling quirks of a 29er.
