Hi, If I wanted to get a new back shock. What do I need to know about the size allowed on my frame, and how do I find this?
|
You need to know the stroke of your current shock and the mounting distance from eyelet to eyelet.
|
Can you explain that a little better plz? I'm new to all this....
|
Let's start out with what you know and what you got!
What kind do you currently have? Measure from center of mounting hole to center of mounting hole. Stroke is the amount of movement the shock covers, i.e. how much travel does the shock have. If it's an air shock, you can release all the air and compress it all the way, then measure the distance, then pull the piston all the way out and measure again. the difference between the two is your stroke. The best thing to do once you have this information is to contact the manufacturer of your existing shock and verify to determine what exactly their measurements are. |
The shock is a Dnm's Dv-7 , 750 lbs/in. It's on a cheap but ok mongoose mgx grx 6.5 bike. I know it's not the best bike around , put it's gone through hell of a lot. I've already upgraded the fork. from an rst 281r to a manitou magnum r (which i just busted, warranty fix). Upgrading the brakes to some avi's etc... Anways, I'll do just like you said, thanks!

Instead of upgrading your shock, which will cost you about $200 to $250 for a decent one; you should consider checking out ebay for a used frame & shock and swapping most of your components over. You've got a decent fork now and the frame is the heart of the bike. If you can get a deal on a new frame let's say $350 to $400 for a decent yet cheaper frame, you'll be better off that a new fork and rear shock on that Mongoose frame. Too expensive, probably not! There are sooooo many people (me included) that sell their bikes for less that 1/2 of what they paid for them and they're in great shape! You may even find a good bike with a crappy fork on it and put your new fork on the used bike!

What kinda money are you talking about?
$500 USD will buy you a decent new bike, or a pretty good used bike! Check our eBay if considering used! L8R |
