Suspension fork upgrade - worth it?

Hey all,

My bike is a 2005 Rocky Mountain Vapour, about as basic as you can get. I'm looking at upgrading a few things on the cheap, as I really like how this bike fits me and I don't need anything fancier.

I've already picked up some second hand disk brakes (front only), and now I'm thinking of upgrading the fork. The one it came with is an SR Suntour XC60, and no matter how I adjust it I can't seem to make it feel good. Either too stiff and chattery, or too soft and bouncy.

I've found someone selling a 2003 Rock Shox Psylo for $75. They claim that it's in good shape and hasn't been used in over five years, but I don't even really know what to look for in terms of wear/damage.

Would I see much of a difference with the Psylo (mainly trail riding in the Rockies)? I'm not particularly good, and I'm also pretty light (115 lbs), so I don't need much, but I'd like a bit of an improvement.

Unfortunately I can't help you out with the fork issue beyond saying that you should ask the guy if you can take the bolts out of the bottom of the fork legs and pull off the lowers to make sure the upper tubes don't show excessive wear.

One thing I did want to mention, though, is that both of my forks say that riders under 130lbs should get a softer spring if they find they can't get the fork adjusted to their liking. At 115lbs, you're pretty light. Maybe a softer spring is something you should look into with whatever fork you end up with.
