Good SS 29er Under a Grand

What are the best options for a singlespeed hardtail that can be had for under a thousand bucks? There seem to be very few options. Thanks.

This is a question?

Here's about five of them under $1000, if you don't mind generic mayo
https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/29er_bikes.htm

After reviewing them, I like this one:
https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...utcast29_x.htm
Disk brakes
SS
Front suspension
Good looks
$500

Buy it, go to LBS upgrade the suspension for a downhill set up, new pedals and decorate with colored grips, pedals, chain, seat, and some pin striping if you wouldn't mind doing it yourself

Five? I only see one hardtail. The others are rigids. But getting one of those rigids and buying a suspension fork would probably work out.

I like that Dawes with the Chromoly frame.

Not sure how easy it would be to convert it to multi-speed though.

Go to google.com and perform an image search for "hardtail mountain bike." Notice how nearly every bike has a suspension fork? Then perform an image search for "rigid mountain bike." Notice how nearly every bike has a rigid fork? Yeah, there's a reason for that....

I bought a 2 year old Spot Longboard 29er off of eBay for $750 shipped. Steel frame, belt drive, nice brakes...
Probably one of the best bikes i've ever ridden.

I've had an SE Stout for a few months to review on my blog, and I liked it a lot. It's been on sale at Performance Bike recently for $499, and Bikesdirect.com has a prior year model for under $400. You can see my review here: SE Stout Review

look at REI and Performance websites, maybe they have a store near you. GT, Giant, Marin, Diamondback and Raleigh all come to mind as all offering 29ers for less than a thou. as mentioned, you can reserve the option to buy rigid and easily add a suspension fork.

Lots of them.

Chromoly single speed on bikesdirect for 339 with good components.

I know, I know. We're supposed to hate that website (even though they kick butt on prices over the LBS).

I ended up finding a brand new 2010 Rig for exactly a thou, so I pulled the trigger. After two days, I'm very happy. Don't worry - the crappy plastic POS pedals are gone; they just threw them on at the shop so I could test ride.
