Hello. I had another thread but its couple of months old so I decided to create a new post. I don't know much about bikes and wasn't able to get a definitive answer by searching online, so here is a simple question for you guys. Which of these two bikes are worth more:

1)Specialized Rockhopper (good condition, 24 gear, manitou front shock)
2)Gary Fisher Tassajara(good condition, 27 gear, Rock Shox Pilot,)

I bought them both for $90 each and wanted to sell the more expensive one (how much would you post it for) and strip the parts off the other one and put them on another frame I have.

Both look like they're probably 2004's or thereabouts. The Tass had a higher retail price when it was new, but the cassette and chain look pretty rusty. People seem to be asking around $375-$400 for the Tassajara on CL, but there's no way I'd pay that. The Rockhopper looks closer to $200-$250 in asking price (closer, but still too high IMO).

If I were in your position, I'd probably take the components off the Tass but get a new chain and cassette. Although that bike appears to be worth more, I think you'd have an easier time selling it as a bare frame than the Rockhopper and you'd be keeping better components for yourself.

I have a rockhopper, and I find Gary fishers to be a little nicer.

Thanks a lot for that reply. You actually answered another question I had which I didn't even write: Which one would be worth more just as a frame.

I was leaning towards the Gary Fisher as it seems like it has lighter parts (shocks and all). I am planning on putting the parts on a Rocky Mountain frame which is supposed to be relatively light so it would be a shame to have an expensive and light bike frame with heavy components. Whichever one fits you better. That GF is WAY bigger than that Rockhopper.

Oh, I just read the part where you need a donor bike for components only. I don't care for either fork personally. Either one's gonna be 4.5 pounds or so and only have 80mm travel. Another fork concern will likely be having a long enough steerer tube for your Rocky Mountain.

You might not be able to use a seatpost from a donor bike.

2004 Rockhopper MSRP = $440
2004 GF Tassajara MSRP = $619

If your value concern centers around reselling the frame, I think you might be able to get more for the Rockhopper. Looks better, has disc tabs. Might take longer because you'll have to wait for someone who needs an extra small frame.

Thanks for the reply. The rocky-mountain already has a seatpost and a seat so that should be ok. I am not very familiar with bikes so I am not sure what you mean by steerer tube being compatible. Is a there a way I can check before taking the bike apart? Thanks
