New steel rigid mtb?

Sorry if this has been covered already.

Is anyone offering a steel framed rigid MTB with gears this year? I seem to remember some cool 1x9 29ers coming out a couple of years ago (GT?) and now I want something like that to use for a tractor/puller and commuter now that I'll pulling my kid around everyday (maybe even hit some trails).

I ride vintage stuff mainly and currently pull and commute on a 1988 Diamond Back (Arrival, I think. Super heavy aluminum, full XT, Japan-made MTB), which I love but would like to have something new that I don't always have to wrench on.

I'm looking for something mainstream ($700-800). Will I just have to build a Surly Troll? I'm looking around for something already build and less than the 1200+ I'll end up spending on a Surly build.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Actually this is a fairly new topic...not sure if it's been covered, but I'll have a crack at it.

The Redline D440 is a pretty stylin' ride for the money. Still running linear pull brakes, but they'll stop the rig just fine.

You could always go buy yourself something like the D600 and sell the Fox fork. Grab yourself a schweet rigid chromo fork from any number of competent builders, and bank the leftover $$$.

Surly Karate Monkey? It comes new as a SS, but has a derailer hanger if you want to convert it.

The Surly Troll is not yet available as a complete bike. Frame set only.
Have you looked at On One? The Inbred is the cheapest rigid steel I can think of off the top of my head.

There are still some GT Peace 9r Multi bikes around if you look. I know a local dealer was selling them off for around $600 recently.
