New bike: Need Ideas
 

I recently bought an 2000 or '01 trek 7000. Solid bike but it has some problems. I am not sure what it is, but there is a creaking coming from what I think is my BB. Also the breaks are very worn and not as good as I would like. It has right now Avid 10s. I am looking for some cheep disk options that will be reliable. I am a college student so I do not have much money... and I already know I need a new hub. So i am wondering about these mechanical disc sets. Are those any good? I really would not like to go above $80. BTW I have a manitou fork. Thanks for your time.

Avid mechs should do you. Cheap and reliable.

I bought a specialized stumpy and got the creaking from what appeared to be the BB also. However it could be:

1) Your pedals creaking. Loosen them off and re-grease
2) The BB casing which screws into the frame. Thats what mine had. Because under 1 year, I had under warranty so shop took it appart and regreased it. Said manufacturers did no torque BB to correct value which they said can happen sometimes.
3) Bearing in the BB. - Loose cranks may hint at this.
4) Your seat post! Just confirm that creaking still there where you are not on the saddle.

If you want to save money, perhaps look at getting disc brake on the front only as I barely use my rear disc brake since it has so much power.

Confirm you have disc compatable wheels and forks with your shop if unsure.

On my Enduro there's a plastic bushing thing that screws into the BB; it cracked and that caused some creaking as well as a slight amount of play in the cranks. My LBS fixed it for free.

My friend has some Avid mechs that he likes better than a lot of hydraulic systems...that would probably be a good choice.

Anyone know anything about the Avid ball bearing seven disc? I am looking at them and they seem to be nice.

Also, I will be needing a new hub. Any sugestions... keep in mind i have little money.

The Sevens are supposed to be very good. As far as hubs go, the XT disc is pretty cheap and solid. I've had mine for several years and they're good as new.

I have a feeling I am going to endup with those... I am going to run down to my LBS tomorrow and see what they advise for the creaking. Ill ask about the avids too while I am there. We'll see what they will charge me for relacing my wheels to...
