Old Skool Mongoose Identity Help....

OK,Short and sweet.I have an opportunity to trade for an old skool Mongoose that the owner says cost $1200 12 years ago,so Im assuming in 1999-2000.The guy is fairly young, and had this adult bike as a teen but is very ignorant on bikes(I could tell this by the answers I was getting) I will be getting more precise info, model numbers in the next day or so,but he said it was a DSX 2000...I can find nothing of the such.I did find a DX 2000,but several different DX2000(s).
Anywho I am uploading pics he sent me to photobucket right now and will have pics posted with in the next ten minutes or so,please take a look at these pics, particularly the upclose pic of the rear derailleur and let me know what you think....

Avoid like the plague.

Remove a 0 from that $1200 and that's how much THAT bike sold at walmart for.

That's a wally world mongoose. I'm absolutely certain.

In 1999/2000, you wouldn't find a $1200 bike sporting shimano tourney deraillieurs, a freewheel, a ballistic fork and a threaded headset on a full suspension bike.

Would also explain why I couldnt find anything about it...I found a few different DX 2000;s that ranged between $3,400 all the way to $550..but no DSX,and I zoomed on the top tube, and it is indeed a dsx 2000...Im about to email this guy and tell him whats up,lol...Well if anyone is in the market for a Yamaha 7.1 DTS receiver, with polk audio bookshelf speakers, polk audio center channel, and a 10'yamaha sub for trade on a bike let me know

That is definitely tourney, if it was a higher level deraillieur the mount would not look like that.

There are many depot store bikes out there and search engines don't always have all the pics.

I just found an old raleigh record near the house,in ready to ride condition, lol for $70...Thinking of emailing the guy and offering $50 to see what happens.I was actually looking for a road bike when the guy with the mongoose emailed me and lured me with delusions of grandeur about his "$1200 bike"...This bike looks like it needs a loving home. What you know about an old skool raleigh?...Oh,forgot,wrong forum,,DOE!!!!

Shame about the Mongoose. As a general rule, any mass market MTB speced with quill stem past the year 1995 will not have a 4-digit price tag.

In my area that Raleigh Record would be a good deal even at $150 if in good shape. You can sell 'em here for $200 usually. Definitely not the most sprightly road bikes around, though.

I love the INSANE brake lever position!

Tell the seller you'll give him $12 and a swift kick in the groin.

Seriously, IMHO he's getting the better deal. A fair price and a dose of reality.

And where is this that they go for that price at? Just curious...They bike is around 30min away from me,not too bad to just go take a look but I want something quicker than I have now,and I already have a new aluminum JAMIS hybrid so dont think the raleigh will be much of an upgrade in that dept...But for some reason I want her

Just across the river from me in Portland, OR.

Looks like I'm $25 high. Here's one for $175

I like the paint on the one you're looking at much better though. That green with off-white panels and gold decals looks sharp!

There's a crappier one selling for $60 but needs lots of help and has stem shifters.

I dunno if you'll get any bucks in your part of the world. That guy's been trying to sell since at least May 6.

From my perusal of posts from a couple of North Carolinian flippers, olde road bikes do much better here than there. Conversely mountain bikes are generally much more flippable there than here.

Bad move cyclops. Don't do it.

You'll have to retorque every bolt and nut, retension and check your wheelset, suspension won't work worth a crap. It will be far less than inefficient. You'll be very luck if you get it to properly shift for more than a few miles.

Mongoose made some decent rides, but that's not one of 'em.

It's a 1973 Raleigh Record. The downside is it has chrome steel rims, cottered steel crank, a high-tensile steel frame and the a Huret Allvit rear derailer, the worst rear derailer known to man. Other than that, it's a great bike. Is it worth $70? Sadly, yes. But I'd still steer clear.
I had one and flipped it to some guy who wanted a single speed frame.

EDIT: BTW I had the red version of the Mongoose DSX that I picked up at a yard sale for $20. It weighed in at about 37lbs. I flipped it to some guy who wanted a heavy bike for exercise. I made him assure me he would not ride it on a serious MTB trail.
Mongoose used to make really good bikes. The Sycamore was one rigid fork model that came with SX shifters/derailers and double wall alloy rims. I think it came with a Tange double butted chromoly frame.

OK,Thanks for the info. The guy w/the raleigh emailed me today with the specs/somponents of the bike and was firm on $70,but prob gonna pass just on the fact he is 30-35min away.
The mongoose seller called me today and I didnt answer, and left me a voicemail...I think he really thinks it was a $1200 dollar bike??? Perhaps his parents bought it for him,and at the time they told him it was $1200? dunno but Im torn between just ignoring him and telling him the truth on what he has got.

Not to beat a dead mongoose, but the dork disc on the rear wheel is a dead giveaway also.

Bike looks identical to the bike my parents bought me at costco when i was like 13 which was about 10 years ago. I would be very surprised if that bike sold for more than 300 when new and thats being generous.
