Thoughts on this bike from www.bikesdirect.com for my first mountain bike please.

I am getting ready to purchase my first mountain bike. I estimate my riding will be probably be about 60% on the street, and 40% on trails. I was looking at the Giant Revel 1 and the Specialized Hardrock (I can get either one for about $450.00 locally), but my brother in law advises this is a better bike (especially the components) and a better price. Assembly will not be a problem for me. So, what do you think, do you agree with my brother in law? Is this a better bike and do you think it will be a good bike for my purposes? Here is the link to this bike:

Second question, I have been told, and have read online that for your first mountain bike, you probably should not go with a full suspension bike, but start with a hard tail. Do you agree? Also, in order to get a decent full suspension bike, even on www.bikesdirect.com, you will have to spend around $1000 to get a good quality full suspension bike, otherwise you will be asking for problems in the future. Do you agree with that as well?

Thanks in advance for your opinions/recommendations.
